Why Head Shape Alone Genuinely Isn’t Enough
A complete screw specification genuinely requires three largely independent decisions — the head and drive style, which determines bearing surface and how torque is applied, the thread and point style, which determines what kind of hole or material the screw is driven into, and the mating condition, whether it threads into a tapped hole, a nut, sheet metal, or wood.
Here is why this matters. Because these three dimensions are genuinely independent of each other, the same head style can be paired with completely different thread and point styles depending on the application. A flat head can be a standard machine screw meeting a nut, a self-drilling screw boring its own hole in sheet metal, or a thread-cutting screw entering a pre-tapped hole in plastic, and each of these is a genuinely different product even though the head looks the same. This is why specifying only the head style, the most visually obvious feature, genuinely leaves the specification incomplete.
A genuine, honest limitation is worth stating plainly. Because a manufacturer genuinely cannot infer the thread and point style or mating condition from head style alone, buyers who specify flat head screws or pan head screws without also confirming what the screw threads into will genuinely receive a request for clarification rather than a quote, or worse, may receive a screw that looks right but cannot actually be installed correctly in their application.
