Thread Cutting Screws
Why Cutting Genuinely Needs Far Less Torque
Thread cutting screws have actual cutting edges and flutes machined into the point that physically remove material as chips while being driven in, cutting a precise mating thread. This is genuinely different from thread-forming screws, which have no flutes and instead displace material radially without removing any of it.
Here is why this matters. Because cutting only needs to shear a thin chip at the cutting edge, rather than overcome a material’s full resistance to plastic deformation across the entire thread depth simultaneously, which is what a thread-forming screw must do, a thread-cutting screw genuinely requires significantly lower driving torque than an equivalent thread-forming screw in the same material and hole size. This makes thread-cutting screws the correct choice for harder or more brittle materials, cast iron, hard plastics, or thicker and harder sheet metal, where a thread-forming screw would require excessive torque, risk cracking a brittle material, or simply be unable to displace the material at all.
A genuine, honest limitation is worth stating plainly. Because thread-cutting screws remove material as actual chips, those chips must have somewhere to go, typically a chip cavity machined into the flute. If chips can’t clear the hole, as in a genuinely blind hole with no escape path, they can jam, causing the screw to bind, cross-thread, or the joint to lose clamping force from debris trapped between the threads. This is precisely why thread-forming screws, which displace material and leave no chips to manage at all, remain the better choice specifically for blind holes or wherever chip contamination inside the assembly is a genuine concern. Buyers should confirm whether their hole is through or blind, and whether chip contamination is acceptable, before choosing thread-cutting over thread-forming.
Akbar Fasteners Pvt. Ltd. exports to over 50 countries, and our thread cutting screw range is manufactured and verified for flute geometry and mechanical property compliance under our ISO 9001:2015 quality system.
A Note on Confirming Blind Hole vs Through Hole & Chip Contamination Tolerance
Please confirm whether your hole is blind or through, and whether chip contamination inside the assembly is acceptable, when requesting a quote — this genuinely decides between thread-cutting and thread-forming.

Thread Cutting vs Thread Forming Screws — Quick Reference
Confirming whether your material genuinely needs the lower torque of cutting, or your blind hole genuinely demands the chip-free displacement of forming. This table is the quick reference we use with buyers before quoting.
| Aspect | Thread Cutting Screws | Thread Forming Screws |
|---|---|---|
| Thread Formation Method | Genuinely removes material as chips | Genuinely displaces material, no chips |
| Driving Torque | Genuinely lower for hard/brittle materials | Genuinely higher, can crack brittle materials |
| Blind Hole Suitability | Genuinely risks chip jamming | Genuinely no chips to manage |
