How It’s Calculated
The Weight Formula
Standard volumetric formula used by fastener manufacturers and engineers worldwide.
Hex Bolt Weight Formula
// Volume of cylindrical shank
V_shank = π/4 × d² × L
// Volume of hex head (approx.)
V_head = 0.866 × s² × k
// Total weight
W = (V_shank + V_head) × ρ
V_shank = π/4 × d² × L
// Volume of hex head (approx.)
V_head = 0.866 × s² × k
// Total weight
W = (V_shank + V_head) × ρ
dNominal diameter in cm (M16 → d = 1.6 cm)
LLength under head in cm
sAcross-flats (AF) width in cm per DIN 934
kHead height in cm per ISO 4014
ρMaterial density in g/cm³ (SS 316 = 7.93)
1
Get nominal diameter — e.g. M20 → d = 20mm = 2.0cm. For root area use effective tensile stress area.
2
Look up AF and head height from ISO 4014 (hex bolts) or ASME B18.2.1. Standard values used in all our tables.
3
Calculate shank volume — π/4 × d² × length. For threaded rods use effective thread root diameter for accuracy.
4
Add head volume — hex head approximated as a regular prism: 0.866 × AF² × head height.
5
Multiply total volume by density — result in grams. Divide by 1000 for kg. Multiply by quantity for lot weight.
6
For other materials — multiply SS result by ρ_material / 7.93. All densities in the reference table above.
