Here is why this matters. This distinction is reflected in real dimensional standard differences. Cap screws genuinely carry a tighter body diameter tolerance, closer to a precise locating fit, because they’re expected to engage a closely toleranced or reamed hole directly. Bolts genuinely carry a looser body diameter tolerance, since they only need to pass through a standard clearance hole to reach a nut on the far side. Cap screws also genuinely feature a chamfered point specifically to ease starting into a tapped hole, a detail less critical for a bolt passing through open clearance.

A genuine, honest limitation is worth stating plainly. Because a cap screw’s tighter tolerance is specifically suited to a tapped-hole application, using a cap screw in a wide clearance-hole-and-nut application causes no functional harm but pays for unnecessary precision. Conversely, using a genuinely looser-toleranced bolt in a precision tapped-hole application without a nut can result in a sloppier fit than a true cap screw would provide, with less consistent engagement quality. Buyers should confirm whether their fastener will thread directly into a tapped hole, where a cap screw is genuinely appropriate, or pass through a clearance hole to a nut, where a bolt is genuinely appropriate and more economical, rather than assuming the terms are interchangeable.
