Why an Internal Socket Genuinely Has No Fallback
A socket cap screw’s drive recess is an internal hex socket, requiring a hex key to insert into the screw’s head and engage the internal flats, rather than an external hex bolt head that a wrench grips from outside.
Here is why this matters. Because torque is transmitted via contact pressure on the internal flats, a worn or slightly undersized or mismatched hex key genuinely concentrates contact at just the corners rather than across the full flat face. Under high torque, this concentrated contact can genuinely round off the internal corners of the screw’s socket. This is a real, common failure mode specific to internal drives, and it happens more easily than most people expect, especially with worn keys or when metric and inch key sizes are mixed up.
A genuine, honest limitation is worth stating plainly. Once a socket’s internal corners are rounded, the fastener genuinely has no easy external gripping fallback, unlike an external hex bolt head, which can still be gripped wrench-flat-to-flat, or as a last resort with vise-grips, even if slightly worn. A rounded internal socket genuinely requires specialized extraction methods, such as screw extractors or welding a nut on top, to remove.
