AISI 5147 Chromium Steel
Why More Chromium Genuinely Reaches Deeper
AISI 5147 is genuinely a higher-chromium variant within the same plain-chromium 51xx alloy family as our 5150 grade. Chromium content genuinely runs higher in 5147, up to about 1.15%, versus 5150’s ceiling of about 0.90%, while carbon runs in a similar but slightly shifted band, approximately 0.45-0.52% versus 5150’s approximately 0.48-0.53%. This is a real, specific compositional distinction within the same family, not a different alloying philosophy.
Here is why this matters. Hardenability from chromium is genuinely dose-dependent: more chromium continues to shift the time-temperature-transformation curve further to the right, delaying pearlite formation and allowing martensite to form at even slower cooling rates. 5147’s higher chromium ceiling genuinely gives it deeper through-hardening capability at a given section thickness than 5150. This means 5147 can achieve full hardness in a thicker section than 5150 can, using the same quenching severity — a genuine, specific hardenability advantage from the compositional shift alone.
A genuine, honest limitation is worth stating plainly. Because 5147 is a less commonly melted and stocked variant within the 51xx family compared to the more widely produced 5150 and 5160 grades, it genuinely carries longer lead times and is produced in smaller, more limited heat sizes by many mills. For section sizes where 5150’s chromium content is already sufficient to achieve the needed hardening depth, specifying 5147 adds genuine sourcing friction and cost without a compensating hardenability benefit. 5147 is the deliberate choice specifically when section size genuinely demands the extra chromium’s hardenability reach, not a default upgrade over 5150.
Akbar Fasteners Pvt. Ltd. exports to over 50 countries, and our AISI 5147 range is manufactured and verified for chemistry and hardenability compliance under our ISO 9001:2015 quality system.
A Note on Confirming Section Thickness Against 5150’s Reach
Please confirm your required section thickness when requesting a quote — if 5150’s chromium content already achieves your needed hardening depth, it may genuinely be the faster-sourced, equally effective choice.

AISI 5147 vs AISI 5150 — Quick Reference
Confirming whether your section is genuinely thick enough to need 5147’s extra chromium reach, or 5150 already covers it with easier sourcing. This table is the quick reference we use with buyers before quoting.
| Aspect | AISI 5147 | AISI 5150 |
|---|---|---|
| Chromium Content | Genuinely higher, up to ~1.15% | Lower, up to ~0.90% |
| Through-Hardening Depth | Genuinely deeper at same section | Shallower reach |
| Availability & Lead Time | Genuinely more limited | Genuinely more widely stocked |
