AISI 5147H Chromium Steel

Standard AISI steel designations, including our 5150 grade, specify chemical composition ranges only — they say nothing directly about guaranteed hardenability, how deep the steel will actually harden when quenched. An “H” steel like 5147H is genuinely different: it is produced and certified to a specific hardenability band — a guaranteed minimum and maximum Jominy end-quench hardness at specified distances from the quenched end. 5147H is defined and guaranteed by its actual heat-treatment response, not merely its chemical composition range.

Here is why this hardenability-band guarantee matters, distinct from ordering standard 5150. Two heats of steel can have identical chemistry within the standard composition range yet still show genuinely different hardenability, due to minor variations in grain size, trace elements, or melting practice. A buyer relying purely on chemical composition has no guarantee that every heat will harden to the same depth when quenched. H-steel closes this gap by testing and certifying actual Jominy hardenability curves for every heat, guaranteeing that any heat shipped as 5147H will harden within a specified band. This genuinely matters for parts where consistent, predictable through-hardness after heat treatment is critical to meeting a fatigue or wear-life specification, since a heat that hardens shallower than expected can leave a soft, weak core even though its chemistry technically passed.

A genuine, honest limitation is worth stating plainly. Because H-steel requires the mill to actually run Jominy end-quench testing and certify hardenability band compliance for every heat — a real additional testing step beyond standard chemical certification — it carries a genuine cost and lead-time premium over an equivalent standard-grade steel like plain 5150. For applications where the part’s final heat treatment is not especially section-thickness-sensitive, or where the buyer does their own incoming hardenability verification anyway, this premium is not always justified. H-steel is the deliberate, genuine choice specifically when hardenability consistency across heats is a hard requirement for the application, not a blanket upgrade needed for every use of a 51xx-series steel.
