AISI 5150 Chromium Steel

Akbar Fasteners Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai — ISO 9001:2015 certified manufacturer and exporter of AISI 5150 chromium steel. Chromium alone genuinely deepens hardenability without molybdenum’s temper-embrittlement resistance — with an honest note on the tempering range this rules out.

Why Chromium Alone Genuinely Limits Tempering Range

AISI 5150 is a genuinely plain chromium alloy steel — defined by the chromium addition, approximately 0.70-0.90%, alone, with no nickel or molybdenum added, unlike the chrome-moly or chrome-nickel-moly steel families. The “51” in the AISI designation specifically denotes a chromium-only alloy series, and the “50” denotes approximately 0.50% carbon. This means 5150’s alloying philosophy is genuinely narrower and more targeted than a chrome-moly steel: it relies on chromium’s hardenability boost alone, not a combination of alloying mechanisms.

Here is why chromium specifically, without molybdenum, creates a real, distinct hardenability profile. Chromium is genuinely effective at shifting the time-temperature-transformation curve to the right during quenching, allowing martensite to form at slower cooling rates than a plain carbon steel of the same carbon content could achieve — genuinely letting a thicker section through-harden than an equivalent plain carbon steel. But chromium alone, without molybdenum, does not resist temper embrittlement the way a chrome-moly combination does. This means 5150, while genuinely deeper-hardening than plain carbon steel, is more susceptible to a specific temper embrittlement risk in the 375-575°C tempering range than a chrome-moly grade like 4140 tempered in the same range — a genuine, specific metallurgical trade-off from omitting molybdenum.

A genuine, honest limitation follows directly. Because 5150 relies on chromium’s hardenability alone, without moly’s temper-embrittlement resistance, it is not the preferred choice for parts that must be tempered specifically within that 375-575°C embrittlement-risk range for their required hardness and toughness balance — for such applications, chrome-moly grades are genuinely preferred. 5150’s actual sweet spot is in applications like leaf springs and coil springs, where the section is thin-to-moderate, chromium’s hardenability alone is sufficient, the tempering temperature can often be tuned outside the worst embrittlement window, and cost savings from omitting moly matter for high-volume spring production. 5150 is a genuine, deliberate, cost-driven choice for spring applications specifically, not a general substitute for chrome-moly in all structural roles.

Akbar Fasteners Pvt. Ltd. exports to over 50 countries, and our AISI 5150 range is manufactured and verified for chemistry and hardenability compliance under our ISO 9001:2015 quality system.

A Note on Confirming Final Tempering Temperature

Please confirm your part’s required tempering temperature when requesting a quote — if it falls within the 375-575°C range, a chrome-moly grade may genuinely be the better fit than 5150.
