AISI 5145H Chromium Steel
Why Carbon and Chromium Genuinely Do Different Jobs
AISI 5145H is a lower-carbon, H-band-certified chromium steel. Carbon runs genuinely lower, approximately 0.43-0.50%, than our 5147H grade’s approximately 0.44-0.51% or our 5150’s approximately 0.48-0.53%, while carrying the same certified Jominy hardenability-band guarantee already established for our H-grade steels. 5145H combines the H-certification approach with a specifically lower-carbon chemistry window.
Here is why this matters, and it rests on a genuine, important metallurgical distinction: carbon content and chromium content control two genuinely different things in a hardened steel. Chromium controls hardenability depth — how far into the section martensite can form at a given quench rate. Carbon content controls the maximum achievable hardness of that martensite itself, independent of how deep it forms. Lowering carbon, as 5145H does relative to 5147H or 5150, genuinely lowers the maximum attainable as-quenched hardness ceiling, but genuinely improves the steel’s toughness and ductility in the hardened-and-tempered condition, and improves weldability, because there is less carbon available to form the hard, brittle, crack-prone microstructure. This is a genuine, real trade-off, distinct from the chromium-dose story that separates 5147 from 5150.
A genuine, honest limitation is worth stating plainly. Because 5145H’s lower carbon genuinely caps its maximum achievable hardness below what a higher-carbon 51xx grade like 5150 or 5147 can reach, it is not the right choice for parts whose design specifically calls for the highest attainable hardness value at the surface or through-section — certain wear-resistant tooling or very high fatigue-strength requirements, for example. For those applications, a higher-carbon grade is genuinely preferred despite its lower toughness. 5145H’s genuine niche is parts needing certified, consistent hardenability depth specifically at a moderate hardness level, where toughness and crack resistance in service matter as much as raw hardness — not a universal “H” upgrade for every application.
Akbar Fasteners Pvt. Ltd. exports to over 50 countries, and our AISI 5145H range is manufactured and verified for chemistry and certified hardenability band compliance under our ISO 9001:2015 quality system.
