What We Mean by “Nuts”
A nut is the internally threaded counterpart to a bolt or stud, and its design determines far more than just how it’s tightened — it governs vibration resistance, reusability, maximum service temperature, and how the joint behaves under repeated loading. Nuts are frequently specified as a matched pair with a specific bolt or stud grade (ASTM A194 nuts with A193 studs, for example), so the nut isn’t an afterthought — it’s half of the fastening system.

Choosing the Right Locking Mechanism
A plain hex nut relies entirely on thread friction and clamp load to stay in place — fine for static joints, but a real liability under vibration. The choice between a nylon-insert lock nut, an all-metal lock nut, and a flange nut comes down to operating temperature, reusability, and whether the joint will see sustained vibration.
