What We Mean by “Screws”
A screw is defined by how it engages material: unlike a bolt, which needs a nut or a pre-tapped hole to clamp against, a screw is designed to form or cut its own thread as it’s driven in — or, for machine screws, to engage a thread that’s already been cut or tapped. That single distinction is why the “right screw” question is really a question about the material you’re fastening into and how much pre-preparation you’re willing to do.

Choosing the Right Screw Mechanism
The single biggest mistake we see is specifying a self-tapping screw where a self-drilling one was needed, or vice versa — because the difference isn’t cosmetic, it’s whether a pilot hole has to be drilled first. The choice between machine, self-tapping, self-drilling, and set screws comes down to what you’re fastening into and how much pre-drilling is actually practical on site.
