Wood Screws
Why a Smooth Shank Genuinely Helps Clamping
Our coach screws typically thread the full length for maximum structural grip. A standard wood screw is genuinely different in profile: it has a smooth, unthreaded shank section directly beneath the head, with threads confined to roughly the lower half to two-thirds of the screw’s length. The smooth shank passes freely through the top piece of wood without gripping it at all, while only the threaded lower portion engages and grips the bottom piece.
Here is why this partial-thread geometry matters mechanically. Because the smooth shank doesn’t grip the top piece, as the screw is driven in, the threaded portion pulls the bottom piece up toward the head, while the top piece is free to be drawn down and clamped tightly against it by the underside of the head — a genuine, deliberate clamping action between the two pieces. A fully threaded screw, or a coach screw, would instead grip both pieces simultaneously along its length, which can actually prevent the two pieces from being pulled together as tightly, since the top piece can’t slide freely along a threaded section already engaging it.
A genuine, honest caution follows from the traditional gimlet point most wood screws carry. It tapers to a sharp, narrow tip specifically to help start the screw and begin displacing soft wood fibers without a pre-drilled hole in many cases. But this same softness-optimized design genuinely cannot handle harder engineered woods or hardwoods without splitting them, since the wood fibers get pushed apart faster than the screw’s taper can accommodate. A pilot hole is still genuinely recommended near board ends or in hardwood, despite the gimlet point’s self-starting design.
Akbar Fasteners Pvt. Ltd. exports to over 50 countries, and our wood screw range is manufactured and verified for shank-to-thread ratio and point geometry under our ISO 9001:2015 quality system.
A Note on Confirming Wood Species & Board Thickness
Please confirm your wood species and joint thickness when requesting a quote — hardwood and engineered wood genuinely benefit from a pilot hole, even with the gimlet point’s self-starting design.

Wood Screw vs Coach Screw — Quick Reference
Confirming whether your joint genuinely needs two pieces clamped tightly together, or maximum structural grip into heavy timber. This table is the quick reference we use with buyers before quoting.
| Aspect | Wood Screw | Coach Screw |
|---|---|---|
| Shank Design | Genuinely smooth upper, threaded lower | Typically fully threaded |
| Clamping Action | Genuine, deliberate two-piece clamp | Grips both pieces simultaneously |
| Typical Drive | Screwdriver — Phillips, slotted | Wrench — hex or square head |
