Why a Longer Screw Genuinely Doesn’t Hold Better
Sheet metal screws have a sharp-tapered point and a relatively coarse, deep thread pitch designed to cut or form their own mating thread directly into thin sheet metal as they’re driven, without any pre-tapped thread or nut required, unlike a machine screw which needs a matching pre-tapped thread already in place.
Here is why this matters. Because sheet metal is thin, the screw only ever engages a small number of thread turns within the material regardless of the screw’s overall length. Genuine holding power is capped by the sheet’s thickness, not by how long the screw is, so length beyond what’s needed to fully engage the sheet adds no real holding power and can create genuine risk of protruding through the far side.

Because so few thread turns are actually engaged in thin material, the pilot hole diameter is genuinely critical — a hole too large further reduces the already-limited engagement and can strip with very little resistance, while a hole too small can crack or dish the sheet or shear the screw during driving.
