What FF-W-100 Actually Covers
Federal Specification FF-W-100 is a US government procurement standard covering flat washers — plain, non-lock washers used to distribute load, protect a surface, or provide a bearing point under a nut or bolt head. Unlike a purely dimensional commercial standard, FF-W-100 structures each washer designation around three variables that must be specified together: Type (the general series and dimensional pattern), Grade (the material the washer is made from), and Class (the finish applied to it).
That three-part structure exists because government and defense contracts genuinely need to specify washers unambiguously across long supply chains — a purchase order referencing FF-W-100 Type A, Grade 1, Class 1 leaves very little room for a supplier to substitute a materially different washer, which is exactly the point. It’s a more rigid, audit-friendly specification structure than most commercial washer standards, built for the procurement environment it serves.
