What Is a DIN 137-B Spring Wave Washers
A conventional split spring (lock) washer resists loosening by digging its cut, angled edges into the bearing surfaces on either side — effective, but concentrated at just two contact points, which can mark softer materials and doesn’t provide a genuinely predictable spring rate. DIN 137 takes a different approach entirely: it’s a flat spring washer, not a locking device, designed to compensate for axial movement and apply a controlled, distributed clamping force rather than bite into anything.
Form B is the multi-wave version — stamped with several gentle undulations around the washer’s circumference, as opposed to Form A’s single curved profile. More waves mean a softer, more linear spring characteristic across its compression range, giving more predictable control over the actual preload force applied. That makes Form B particularly well suited to bearing preloading, taking up small axial clearances from thermal expansion or wear, and applications where a soft, even spring force matters more than raw locking bite.
