Why Grade 55 Is the Default Anchor Grade
ASTM F1554 defines three anchor bolt grades by minimum yield strength — Grade 36, Grade 55, and Grade 105 — and Grade 55 sits in the middle, but it’s genuinely the default choice for the large majority of structural anchor bolt applications, not merely a compromise between the other two. Its carbon-manganese composition delivers a meaningful strength step above Grade 36’s plain carbon steel baseline, while remaining fully weldable — a property Grade 105 specifically sacrifices for its higher strength.
Weldability is a genuinely practical, frequently decisive factor in anchor bolt selection — many foundation and column base plate connections require field welding of washers, plates, or supplementary anchoring hardware directly to the anchor rod, and Grade 105’s higher-carbon, higher-strength composition makes it considerably more prone to weld cracking and hydrogen embrittlement if welded without careful preheat and procedure control. Grade 55 avoids this concern almost entirely under normal welding practice, which is precisely why most engineers specify it by default unless a specific structural calculation demands Grade 105’s higher capacity.
The result is a genuinely well-balanced grade — strong enough for the overwhelming majority of building foundation, column base plate, and general structural anchoring applications, while remaining forgiving to fabricate, weld, and bend to the hooked or headed configurations anchor bolts commonly require.
