Why Grade 105 Trades Weldability for Strength
Grade 105 reaches its 105 ksi minimum yield strength through a quenched and tempered alloy steel process, genuinely different from Grade 55’s simpler carbon-manganese chemistry and as-rolled or normalized condition. That heat treatment and typically higher alloy content are precisely what deliver the near-doubled strength over Grade 55, but they come with a real, unavoidable consequence: reduced weldability.
Field welding Grade 105 material — even for something as routine as tack-welding a leveling nut or supplementary plate — genuinely risks localized heat-affected zone softening or hydrogen-assisted cracking, since the quenched-and-tempered microstructure that gives Grade 105 its strength is specifically vulnerable to disruption from uncontrolled welding heat. ASTM F1554 does not include Grade 105 among grades recommended for supplementary weldability requirements the way Grade 55 is commonly specified with.
That makes Grade 105 the correct, deliberate choice specifically when structural load calculations demonstrate that Grade 55’s 55 ksi capacity is genuinely insufficient — heavy machinery foundations, high-rise column base connections, and similar high-load anchoring where reducing bolt diameter or quantity via higher-strength material provides real engineering and cost benefit, provided the design and installation plan avoid field welding to the anchor rod itself.

A Note on Product Scope and Weldability
ASTM F1554 covers anchor bolts and rods, typically supplied straight, bent, or headed, with matching heavy hex nuts and washers. Grade 105 is not intended for field welding — if your installation plan requires welding to the anchor rod, please confirm with your structural engineer whether Grade 55 (which does support a weldability supplementary requirement) is the more appropriate specification.
