An anchor bolt secures a structural or equipment base to concrete, and the fundamental split in the whole category is timing: cast-in-place anchors are embedded into the concrete before it cures, while post-installed anchors are drilled and fixed into concrete that has already hardened. That single decision — made at the design stage, long before material selection — determines which entire family of anchor you need.

Cast-In-Place vs Post-Installed Anchors
The most consequential anchor bolt decision happens before the concrete is even poured — because cast-in-place anchors have to be positioned and held in place during the pour, while post-installed anchors are drilled in after the concrete has cured, which means they’re the only real option for retrofit and modification work. Within post-installed anchors, the choice between wedge, sleeve, and chemical anchors comes down to load capacity, edge distance, and whether the concrete is cracked or uncracked.
