Standard vs Custom — When a Catalogue Part Isn’t Enough
The large majority of applications are correctly served by a standard, catalogue-specified fastener — one of the many product pages across our site covering standard thread sizes, standard head forms, and standard material grades. Custom manufacturing exists specifically for the requirements a standard catalogue part cannot meet: a non-standard overall length, a non-standard thread pitch, a head or drive combination not offered as standard, a material or grade combination we don’t carry pre-stocked, or a part geometry specific to one piece of equipment or one application.
A genuinely useful way to decide is simple: if your requirement can be fully described by picking from the size charts and material options already on our standard product pages, it almost certainly should be — standard parts are faster to source, more cost-effective, and backed by established stock and tooling. Custom manufacturing is the correct path specifically when at least one dimension, feature, or specification genuinely falls outside what a standard part offers.

First Article Inspection — Catching Errors Before They Scale
First Article Inspection (FAI) is the practice of producing a small initial batch of a new custom part — often just one to a handful of pieces — and subjecting it to complete dimensional and, where applicable, mechanical verification against the engineering drawing before committing to the full production run. Every dimension, tolerance, thread specification, and material property called out on the drawing is checked and documented in a formal FAI report.
The value of this step is straightforward: a dimensional or process error caught at the first article stage costs the time and material of a handful of parts to correct. The same error, undetected until the full production run is already complete, costs the time and material of the entire order — and in the worst case, a part that fails to fit or function correctly once it reaches the customer’s assembly line, with all the downstream cost and schedule impact that failure carries.
This is precisely why we treat first article inspection as a mandatory step on every custom order, not an optional add-on — the full production run does not begin until the first article has been measured, verified against the drawing, and formally approved. This single discipline is the difference between a custom manufacturing process a customer can rely on at scale, and one that simply hopes the tooling was set up correctly.

Reverse Engineering — From Physical Sample to Manufacturing Spec
Not every custom requirement starts with a drawing. Original drawings are frequently lost over the years, especially for legacy equipment, older machinery, or parts originally sourced from a supplier no longer in business. Where a physical sample exists but no drawing does, we can measure the part directly and produce a complete manufacturing specification from it — thread size and pitch, overall dimensions, head and drive geometry, and, where possible, material composition.
This reverse engineering process typically involves precision measurement of the physical sample across every relevant dimension, thread gauging to confirm exact thread specification, and, where material identity is uncertain, material testing or PMI verification to confirm composition before a replacement part is manufactured to match.
This capability is particularly valuable for maintaining legacy equipment where a single failed or worn fastener needs an exact replacement, and no other path to a correct manufacturing specification exists.
