An anchor bolt is any bolt designed specifically to transfer load from a structure — a column base plate, equipment foundation, or handrail post — into concrete or masonry. This is a broad functional category covering several genuinely different products, unified only by their shared purpose: providing a threaded connection point that is ultimately held in place by concrete rather than by a nut on both sides of a clearance hole.

The single most important decision within this category has nothing to do with thread size or head shape — it is whether the concrete already exists or not. A cast-in-place anchor bolt is positioned in the formwork before concrete is poured, becoming permanently embedded as the concrete cures around it — this is only possible during new construction, while the pour is still being planned. A post-installed anchor is placed into a hole drilled into concrete that has already fully cured, making it the only option for retrofit work, equipment relocation, or any addition to an existing structure.

These are not simply two price points for the same job — they are genuinely different mechanical solutions to different construction sequencing realities. Cast-In-Place vs Post-Installed — Which Do You Actually Need?

Cast-in-place anchor bolts — headed bolts, L-bolts, or J-bolts — are positioned in the concrete formwork before the pour and become permanently locked into the cured concrete, transferring load through the bearing area of the embedded head, plate, or bend. This is the standard, most cost-effective approach whenever a project is planning a new concrete pour and the anchor locations are known in advance during design — but it is only possible before the concrete is poured. Once the concrete has cured, cast-in-place is no longer an option at all.

Post-installed anchors solve exactly this situation: a hole is drilled into concrete that has already fully cured, and either a wedge (expansion) anchor or a chemical (adhesive) anchor is installed into that drilled hole. This is the only viable approach for retrofit work, adding new equipment to an existing foundation, correcting a missed or mispositioned cast-in-place anchor, or any situation where the concrete’s anchor locations were not known — or the concrete itself did not yet exist — at the time of original design.

The practical decision rule is simple: if the concrete for this specific application has not been poured yet, and the anchor location is known now, cast-in-place is almost always the correct, most economical choice. If the concrete already exists, post-installed is the only option available at all — the choice has effectively already been made by the construction timeline itself.

Wedge (Expansion) vs Chemical Anchors

Both work in cured concrete, but hold on through entirely different physical principles.

Wedge (Expansion) Anchor

A tapered plug is drawn up through an expansion clip as the nut is tightened, forcing the clip to expand outward and grip the sides of the drilled hole through friction. Holding capacity comes entirely from this mechanical wedging action.

Use for: Applications needing immediate load capacity right after installation, without a cure time, in solid (non-cracked) concrete.
Adhesive Bond · Cure Time Required

Chemical (Epoxy) Anchor

A threaded rod is set into a drilled hole using a two-part epoxy or vinyl ester adhesive, which bonds chemically to both the rod and the surrounding concrete along the full embedment length. Holding capacity comes from this adhesive bond strength, not mechanical interference.

Use for: Higher-capacity anchoring, close edge distances or spacing where expansion forces would be problematic, and applications where the adhesive’s full-length bond is preferred over a localized mechanical grip.
