Every bolt, nut, and screw on our site exists to engage a thread and generate clamping force. A washer is fundamentally different: it is a flat or shaped disc with a plain center hole and no thread of any kind, placed between a nut or bolt head and the material it clamps. A washer does not tighten anything on its own — it sits passively in the joint, doing whatever specific job its shape is designed for.

That job varies genuinely by washer type. A flat washer simply spreads the bolt or nut’s clamping load over a wider area and protects the surface beneath from being marked or dug into. A spring or split lock washer compresses slightly as the joint is tightened, intended to provide some mechanical resistance to loosening. A Belleville washer is a precisely engineered coned-disc spring, providing a defined, calculable spring force rather than a rough mechanical assist. Each of these is a genuinely different function, achieved through shape alone rather than any thread engagement.

Spreading a nut or bolt head’s clamping force over a wider washer area than the nut’s own bearing face provides meaningfully reduces the risk of the fastener digging into or deforming softer material beneath it.

Do Split Lock Washers Actually Prevent Loosening?

A split (helical spring) lock washer is a washer cut and twisted into a single-turn helix, intended to compress flat as the joint is tightened and provide continuous spring-back pressure that, in theory, keeps the nut or bolt engaged even if the joint begins to loosen slightly under vibration. This has been a widely used, widely trusted component for generations of general assembly work.

However, a substantial body of engineering testing — including studies referenced by several structural and mechanical engineering standards bodies — has found that split lock washers provide considerably less genuine anti-loosening benefit than commonly believed, particularly once a joint has been correctly torqued to its intended clamp load. At full design torque, the washer is typically compressed nearly flat, and the small amount of remaining spring-back force is often much less than the friction already holding a properly torqued joint together — meaning the washer contributes comparatively little additional locking benefit beyond what correct torque alone already provides.

This is not a reason to avoid split lock washers entirely — they remain a simple, inexpensive, widely understood component, and continue to see legitimate general-purpose use. But where genuine, verified anti-loosening or defined spring-preload performance is actually required, a Belleville washer (with calculable, specified spring force), a correctly specified nylon insert lock nut, or a properly applied thread-locking compound are generally the more reliable, better-documented choices — and this honest distinction is worth knowing before specifying a split lock washer purely for its locking reputation.
