Reading the Property Class Marking — Understanding 8.8, 10.9, 12.9

How to Read Property Class Numbers — ISO 898 Marking Explained

The ISO 898 / DIN property class system uses a two-digit code separated by a decimal point to encode both UTS and yield ratio in a single number. Grade 8.8: First digit (8) × 100 = 800 MPa minimum UTS. Second digit (8) × 10% × first digit (800 MPa) = 640 MPa minimum yield strength. The ratio 640/800 = 0.80 — confirming 80% yield-to-tensile ratio. Grade 10.9: 10 × 100 = 1000 MPa UTS. 9 × 10% × 1000 = 900 MPa YS (actual standard specifies ≥940 MPa — the rule is approximate).

This property class system applies to ISO 898 hex bolts, set screws, and studs in metric thread M1.6–M100. It does not apply to nuts — nuts use a different marking system (property class 8, 10, 12 without the decimal) defined by proof load. The ASTM system uses entirely different designations (A193 B7, A307, A325) with separate material and mechanical property specifications.

Grade 12.9 and hydrogen embrittlement: High-strength fasteners (≥1040 MPa / Grade 10.9 and above) are susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement during electroplating — the reason Grade 12.9 is never hot-dip galvanised and must not be electroplated with zinc without a low-hydrogen baking procedure after plating. For Grade 12.9 in corrosive environments, specify a mechanical zinc coating (Geomet, Delta-Protekt) or stainless steel fasteners.

Grade 12.9 — Never Hot-Dip Galvanise: HDG bath temperature (~450°C) partially tempers 12.9 alloy steel, reducing strength. Grade 12.9 in outdoor/corrosive environments: specify Geomet coating (mechanical zinc, no H₂ embrittlement risk) or switch to SS A4-80 for equivalent strength.

Surface Finishes — Corrosion Protection for Carbon Steel

Carbon Steel Surface Finishes & Coatings

Carbon steel corrodes without protection. Surface finish selection governs service life in the installation environment. Grade 12.9 must never be hot-dip galvanised — specify mechanical zinc or change alloy.

Black / Self-Colour
Suitable Grades: All · Indoor Dry Service
Bare carbon steel with mill scale — no corrosion protection. For indoor dry applications, pre-assembly (galvanising later), or where coating is applied post-installation. Grade 8.8, 10.9, 12.9, and A193 B7 for ASME flange service (bolt coating incompatible with gasket seating).
Hot-Dip Galvanised
ASTM A153 / IS 1367 Pt.11 · 55–85µm Zn · Grade 4.6 & 8.8 ONLY
Hot-dip galvanised (HDG) per ASTM A153 or IS 1367 Pt.11 — 55–85µm zinc coating by immersion in molten zinc bath at ~450°C. Excellent outdoor and mild industrial corrosion protection. Suitable for Grade 4.6 and Grade 8.8 only. Grade 10.9, 12.9 must not be HDG — bath temperature partially tempers high-strength alloy steel, reducing strength below specified minimums.
Zinc Plated + Passivated
ASTM B633 / IS 1573 · 5–12µm Zn · All Grades
Electroplated zinc with yellow or clear passivation (chromate). Thinner coating (5–12µm) than HDG — limited outdoor service life but acceptable for indoor and sheltered service. Suitable for all grades including 10.9 and 12.9 when followed by low-hydrogen embrittlement relief baking (190°C ≥4h for ≥1040 MPa grades per ASTM B633).
Mechanical Zinc (Geomet)
ASTM B695 · Geomet · Delta-Protekt · All Grades
Mechanical zinc coatings (Geomet 500, Delta-Protekt KL100) applied by mechanical tumbling at ambient temperature — no hydrogen embrittlement risk. Suitable for Grade 12.9 where HDG and electroplating are both excluded. Corrosion resistance 720–1,000+ hours NSST. The correct coating for high-tensile fasteners in outdoor or corrosive service.
Phosphate + Oil
MnPO₄ / ZnPO₄ · All Grades · Anti-Galling
Manganese or zinc phosphate conversion coating + oil — primarily for anti-galling and as a primer coat under paint or sealant. Used on Grade 10.9 and 12.9 fasteners in automotive and machinery assembly where dimensional tolerance must be maintained and galling prevention is the priority. No meaningful corrosion protection without topcoat.
PTFE / Xylan Coating
ASTM B633 Alt · Low-Friction · All Grades
PTFE-based dry film coatings (Xylan, Molykote) — excellent lubrication for torque-controlled tightening and controlled preload in flanged connections. Used on A193 B7 ASME stud bolts where consistent K-factor (lubrication factor) is required per ASME PCC-1 bolt tightening procedures. Available on all grades.

ASTM A193 B7 / A194 2H
A193 B7 (Cr-Mo alloy steel 4140/4142) is the primary ASTM bolting standard for ASME B16.5 pressure flanges, ASME VIII vessels, and ASME B31.3 piping. B7M is the NACE-compliant version (≤235 HB, ≤22 HRC) for sour H₂S service. A194 Grade 2H is the matching heavy hex nut for B7 stud bolts; 2HM is the NACE version. Akbar Fasteners explicitly states “A193 B7 / UNS designation” on MTC — A193 B7 is alloy steel, not carbon steel, but specified here as the primary ASME bolting grade.
