Three Grades — Same Base Alloy, Different Carbon Content

SS 304 vs 304L vs 304H — Which Grade to Specify

304, 304L, and 304H share identical 18% Cr / 8% Ni base chemistry. The three variants differ only in carbon content range — and that carbon level governs sensitisation behaviour, weld performance, and elevated-temperature creep resistance. Always specify the correct suffix for the application.

304 vs 304L — The Carbon Difference and Why 304L Is the Default
SS 304L (≤0.030% C) is the default for 95%+ of new procurement. The very low carbon prevents sensitisation — the precipitation of Cr₂₃C₆ chromium carbides at grain boundaries during welding or exposure to 425–870°C. Sensitised 304 (≤0.080% C) loses chromium from the grain boundary zones, creating paths for intergranular corrosion. Specify 304L unless: the application is non-welded and cost-sensitivity requires it (then standard 304 is acceptable), or service temperature exceeds 400°C (specify 304H for creep resistance). For all food, pharmaceutical, dairy, cryogenic, and welded applications, 304L is mandatory.
Sensitisation — The Temperature Zone That Damages Standard 304

The 425–870°C Sensitisation Zone — Why 304L Prevents Weld Decay

Sensitisation is the most important metallurgical concept for understanding when to specify 304L instead of 304. When austenitic stainless steel is held in the temperature range of 425–870°C — either during welding, post-weld heat treatment, or service at intermediate temperatures — chromium diffuses to grain boundaries to form Cr₂₃C₆ carbides. This depletes the adjacent metal of chromium below the 10.5% minimum required for the passive Cr₂O₃ layer, leaving a chromium-depleted zone at every grain boundary throughout the microstructure.

The result is intergranular corrosion (also called weld decay, Bain corrosion, or IGA — intergranular attack) — corrosion propagates along grain boundaries, not through grain interiors. A sensitised fastener can appear completely intact externally while its interior has been completely destroyed by intergranular corrosion. The classic test for sensitisation is ASTM A262 — the oxalic acid etch screening test followed by the Strauss test.

304L solves this by limiting carbon to ≤0.030% — there is simply not enough carbon available to form Cr₂₃C₆ carbides in meaningful quantity. As the temperature zone diagram shows, 304L in welded service safely passes through the sensitisation zone without depleting grain boundary chromium. 304H deliberately uses the higher carbon range (0.04–0.10%) for a completely different reason: above ~400°C in long-term service, the carbides that form in 304H actually pin dislocation movement and resist creep — the same carbides that damage 304 in corrosive service provide a creep benefit in elevated-temperature structural service.

Same ISO 9001:2015 quality system as our complete SS range. PMI XRF confirms Cr 18–20% and Ni 8–10.5% — the critical check distinguishing genuine 304L from lower-grade imposters marked as A2.

ISO / DIN / EN
ISO 3506 A2
ISO 3506-1 covers 304 and 304L under property class A2: A2-70 (≥700 MPa UTS, annealed or cold worked) and A2-80 (≥800 MPa UTS, strain-hardened). A2 is the standard marking on all 304L fasteners — the “A” identifies austenitic stainless steel and “2” identifies the alloy group (304/304L vs A4=316/316L). Fasteners marked A2 without specifying 304L may be produced from any A2-grade stainless including 304 (≤0.080% C). Akbar Fasteners MTC explicitly states UNS S30403 alongside the A2 property class for unambiguous identification.

ASTM International
ASTM A193 B8 / A276
A193 Grade B8 covers austenitic stainless steel bolting including SS 304 (S30400) and 304L (S30403). Unlike B8M (specific to 316/316L), B8 is a generic designation covering all 3xx austenitic SS — the UNS designation on the MTC (S30400 or S30403) is the definitive identification. A276 covers hot-finished and cold-finished SS bar for fastener manufacture — specifies composition and mechanical properties per grade. Full MTC per ASTM A276 dispatched with every 304L order.

EN 1.4301 / 1.4307 / 1.4948
European material numbers: 1.4301 = SS 304 (S30400, ≤0.07% C); 1.4307 = SS 304L (S30403, ≤0.030% C) — these two are the most common stainless steel material numbers in European engineering. 1.4948 = SS 304H (S30409, 0.04–0.10% C, used in European pressure vessel design for high-temperature service). Akbar Fasteners accepts all three EN designations and cross-references to UNS/ASTM for MTC issuance.

Food / Pharma
FDA / EHEDG / 3-A
SS 304L (S30403) meets FDA requirements for food-contact surfaces under 21 CFR. EHEDG (European Hygienic Engineering and Design Group) and 3-A Sanitary Standards specify 304L as an acceptable stainless steel for food and dairy equipment. For pharmaceutical applications, 304L meets GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) stainless steel requirements for non-product-contact structural fasteners. Product-contact pharmaceutical fasteners may require EP and USP testing — available on request.

Cryogenic
ASTM A320 / BS EN 10088
SS 304L (austenitic) retains full toughness to cryogenic temperatures — no ductile-brittle transition unlike ferritic or Cr-Mo alloy steels. ASTM A320 Grade B8 covers 304 stainless bolting for cryogenic pressure equipment. BS EN 10088 covers stainless steels for cryogenic service. 304L is the standard cryogenic fastener for LNG equipment, industrial gas plants, and liquid nitrogen/oxygen service at temperatures to -253°C.
