SS 316 vs 316L vs 316H — Which Grade to Specify

316, 316L, and 316H share the same base Ni-Cr-Mo chemistry. The only difference is carbon content — and carbon content governs sensitisation risk, weld performance, and high-temperature creep resistance. Specify correctly by service condition, not by habit.

Why Carbon Content Is the Only Difference — and Why It Matters
SS 316L (≤0.030% C) is the default specification for 95% of applications. The very low carbon prevents Cr₂₃C₆ carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during welding or any thermal cycle that dwells in the 425–870°C sensitisation temperature range — eliminating the intergranular corrosion (weld decay) risk. SS 316 (≤0.080% C) is acceptable for non-welded bolted connections, but rarely specified for new projects when 316L is available at equivalent cost. SS 316H (0.04–0.10% C) is specified for elevated-temperature service where the deliberately higher carbon improves creep resistance above 300°C — the same logic as 321 vs 321H. When a 316 drawing does not specify L or H, confirm with the design engineer which grade is intended.

316L vs 304 — What 2% Mo Actually Changes

The difference between SS 304 and SS 316L is 2% molybdenum. That single addition raises chloride pitting resistance from PRE≈18 to PRE≈24 and transforms the alloy from a general-purpose stainless steel into the standard specification for chloride-containing chemical process environments.

PRE ≥ 24: SS 316L passes the minimum threshold for mild chloride environments — coastal industrial atmospheres, dilute chloride process streams, and ASME B16.5 stud bolts in chemical service where occasional chloride exposure is possible.

PRE ≥ 40 required? Consider SS 904L (PRE≈36) or Hastelloy C276 (PRE≈66) for concentrated chloride or direct seawater immersion service.

ISO 3506 A4 class is used on European drawings while ASTM A193 B8M is the US/ASME designation for the same alloy.
