ISO 898-1 grade markings encode two numbers directly readable from the stamp on the bolt head — the first number, multiplied by 100, gives minimum tensile strength in MPa; the second, divided by 10, gives the yield-to-tensile ratio. For Grade 12.9, that’s 12 × 100 = 1200 MPa minimum tensile strength, and 9/10 = 0.9 yield ratio, meaning minimum yield strength works out to 1080 MPa. Both numbers matter: tensile strength sets the ultimate failure point, but yield strength is what determines the actual usable clamping force before permanent deformation begins.

Reaching those numbers requires a quenched and tempered alloy steel — plain carbon steel simply cannot achieve Grade 12.9 properties, so genuine 12.9 bolts are alloy steel (typically containing chromium, molybdenum, or boron) heat treated through a controlled quench-and-temper cycle. That heat treatment is what gives the steel its high strength, but the same process that creates that strength also makes the material genuinely more susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement during subsequent processing — a real trade-off worth understanding fully before specifying Grade 12.9 over a lower class.
