Anatomy of an Eye Bolt — Threaded Shank, Load-Bearing Loop

An eye bolt consists of a threaded shank with a forged circular loop, or “eye,” in place of a conventional bolt head. The threaded end drives directly into a tapped hole in a machine casing, lifting lug, or structural member — or passes through a clearance hole and is secured with a nut — leaving the eye standing proud, ready to accept a shackle, hook, or sling for lifting and rigging.

This is the bolt-side counterpart to our Lifting Eye Nuts: where an eye nut threads onto a stud or bolt that is already fixed in place, an eye bolt threads directly into the equipment or structure itself, making it the correct choice whenever the lifting point needs to be created from a plain tapped hole rather than an existing protruding stud.

Like our lifting eye nuts, every eye bolt is drop-forged, not simply machined from bar stock, and individually proof-tested to a specified multiple of its rated working load before dispatch — critical since this component’s entire purpose is bearing suspended load with a documented safety margin. Shoulder vs Plain — Why Angle of Pull Changes Everything

A plain (unshouldered) eye bolt has no collar beneath the eye — the eye sits directly against the mounting surface with nothing to resist a sideways or angled component of load. Plain eye bolts are rated for straight, in-line vertical pull only. Applying any significant angular load to a plain eye bolt creates a bending moment on the threaded shank that the design never accounted for, and can bend the eye, loosen the thread engagement, or fail the bolt well below its straight-pull rated capacity.

A shoulder eye bolt has a distinct collar beneath the eye, designed to seat fully and squarely against the mounting surface when correctly torqued down. This shoulder bears the angular component of the load directly against the mounting surface rather than putting bending stress into the shank alone — which is why shoulder eye bolts, and only shoulder eye bolts, are rated for angular loading, typically up to 45° from vertical, with capacity progressively derated as the angle increases toward that limit.

The practical rule is simple and non-negotiable: if a lift genuinely requires anything other than a straight vertical pull, only a correctly torqued shoulder eye bolt is appropriate — a plain eye bolt must never be substituted for angular rigging regardless of how tempting the eye’s shape makes that substitution look. Always confirm the eye bolt’s actual rated working load at the specific angle the rigging plan requires, not simply its straight-pull capacity.

No collar beneath the eye. Rated strictly for straight, in-line vertical pull. Lower cost, simpler geometry, correct wherever the rigging plan genuinely never introduces an angular load component.

Use for: Vertical lifting only — machinery hoisting points, motor lifting lugs, and any application where the lift path is confirmed to remain perfectly vertical.

Shoulder Eye Bolt

A distinct collar seats against the mounting surface when fully torqued, bearing the angular load component directly rather than stressing the shank. Rated for angular pull up to a specified angle, typically 45°, with derated capacity as angle increases.
