Anatomy of a U-Bolt — Encircling, Not Axial, Clamping
A U-bolt is a single continuous length of round bar, bent into a U-shape and threaded at both straight ends — there is no head anywhere on the part. In use, the U-shaped bend is placed over a pipe, round bar, tube, or leaf spring, with the two threaded legs passing down through matching holes in a flat mounting bracket or plate positioned beneath the object. A nut (and typically a washer) is threaded onto each leg and tightened, drawing the bracket up against the object from both sides simultaneously.
This is a genuinely different clamping principle from every bolt elsewhere in our range. A hex bolt, socket head bolt, or countersunk bolt clamps by pulling one flat surface toward another along a single axis — the load path runs straight through the bolt’s own axis. A U-bolt instead wraps around the circumference of the object it clamps, with the clamping reaction distributed across the bend and both legs rather than concentrated at a single point — closer in principle to a strap or a hose clamp than to any conventional bolted joint, even though it is manufactured, threaded, and torqued exactly like a bolt.
Because the U-bolt must physically encircle the object being clamped, its inside dimension across the bend is a critical specification parameter in a way no other bolt on our site has — get that dimension wrong, and the U-bolt simply will not fit or clamp correctly, regardless of thread size, grade, or length being otherwise perfectly specified. This is covered in detail below.
Why U-Bolts — The Only Practical Way to Clamp a Round Object
The Only Way to Fully Encircle a Cylindrical Object
Pipes, round bar, tubing, and leaf springs have no flat face for a conventional bolt to clamp against — a U-bolt’s wraparound geometry is the straightforward, standard mechanical answer to mounting anything round to a flat bracket or structure.
Distributed Clamping Force Across the Full Bend
Because the load is carried around the entire bend rather than concentrated at one bolt axis, a U-bolt spreads clamping reaction over a wider contact area of the object being held — reducing local point-loading compared to a single fastener bearing against one side only.
Simple, Field-Serviceable Installation
Installation requires nothing beyond a wrench for the two nuts — no special tooling, no pre-machined recess, and no complex bracket geometry beyond two clearance holes, making U-bolts straightforward to install or replace in field maintenance conditions.
Proven, High-Stress Automotive Standard
Leaf spring U-bolts have been the standard method of securing a vehicle axle to its leaf spring pack for generations of automotive and heavy-truck suspension design, precisely because the encircling clamp handles the high, repeated dynamic loads of a moving suspension reliably.
The I.D. Match — Sizing to the Object, Not Just the Thread
Every conventional bolt on our site is fully specified by thread size, length, grade, and head form. A U-bolt requires one additional, critical dimension that has no equivalent anywhere else in our range: the inside diameter across the bend, which must closely match the outside diameter of the pipe, round bar, or leaf spring pack the U-bolt is actually going to clamp.
Get this dimension wrong in either direction and the joint fails to work as intended. Too large an inside diameter, and the U-bolt cannot apply meaningful clamping pressure against the object — it simply closes around empty clearance before the object is gripped, leaving the connection loose regardless of how hard the nuts are torqued. Too small an inside diameter, and the U-bolt may not fit over the object at all, or may over-stress and locally deform a thin-walled pipe or tube before proper seating is achieved.
Because this inside dimension is entirely dependent on the specific object being clamped — a 2-inch pipe, a specific leaf spring pack thickness, a particular tube OD — U-bolts are far more often manufactured to a drawing or a specified I.D. than ordered purely by a universal catalogue number, unlike most straight bolts on our site. Always confirm the exact object OD (or leaf spring stack height) before ordering, and specify it directly alongside thread size and leg length.
Round Bend vs Square Bend U-Bolts
The bend profile follows the shape of what’s being clamped — round pipe needs a round bend, flat-sided stock needs flat bearing faces.
Round Bend U-Bolt
A continuous semicircular bend matching the round cross-section of pipe, tube, or round bar stock, providing even contact around the curved surface. The standard configuration for the large majority of pipe and conduit clamping applications.
Square Bend U-Bolt
Flat bearing sections on the inside of the bend rather than a continuous curve, matching the flat top surface of a leaf spring pack or square/rectangular tube. The standard configuration for automotive and heavy-truck leaf spring suspension mounting.
U-Bolt Material & Strength Options
Grade selection follows the application — automotive leaf spring duty typically specifies higher-strength alloy steel given the dynamic suspension loads involved.

U-Bolt Reference Size Chart
Typical thread size to pipe OD pairing for round bend U-bolts — always confirm exact inside diameter against the actual pipe or rod OD before ordering.
| Thread Size | Typical Pipe Size (NB) | Typical Inside Ø (mm) | Leg Length Range (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| M8 | 1/2″ – 3/4″ | 21–27 | 75–150 |
| M10 | 1″ | 33 | 100–200 |
| M12 | 1.25″ – 1.5″ | 42–48 | 100–250 |
