What Is a DIN 97 Slotted Flat Head Wood Screws
Of the three common slotted wood screw head styles, DIN 97 is the one built to disappear. The underside of the head is a cone-shaped taper — a countersink — machined to a consistent angle that matches a countersunk pilot hole exactly. As the screw is driven, the tapered head wedges into the countersink and draws itself down until the top surface sits perfectly flush with the timber, rather than resting proud like a round head or partially raised like an oval head.
That flush result is the entire point of specifying this head style. A proud screw head on a deck board becomes a trip hazard and a snag point for bare feet; on furniture, it interrupts a surface meant to be sanded and finished smooth; on a hinge leaf or door strike plate, a countersunk screw is what allows the hardware to sit flat against the timber the way it was designed to.
