What Is a DIN 96 Raised Countersunk Wood Screws
Round head, countersunk, and raised countersunk wood screws all cut the same self-tapping thread into timber — the difference is entirely in what happens above the surface. A round head (DIN 95) sits fully proud; a plain countersunk head (DIN 97) sits fully flush, seated into a matching countersunk hole. DIN 96 sits deliberately between the two: the lower portion of the head is a standard countersunk cone that seats the same way a flush screw does, but above that cone sits a small raised, domed section — giving the visible finish of a round head with the precise, self-centering seating of a countersunk one.
This is why raised countersunk heads are the standard specification for visible hardware — hinge plates, cabinet handles, decorative straps, and fittings finished with a matching cup washer. The countersunk base means the screw locates and seats predictably every time; the raised top means the fastener still reads as an intentional, finished detail rather than a purely functional one.
