What Are DIN 7 Dowel Pins
A dowel pin’s job is positional accuracy, not load-bearing. Unlike a bolt or a stud, a dowel pin carries no thread and generates no clamping force — it is pressed or slip-fit into a precisely reamed or ground hole to hold two mating components in exact, repeatable alignment relative to each other. Once fitted, it prevents lateral shift between parts during assembly, disassembly, and re-assembly — something a bolted joint alone, with its inherent hole clearance, cannot guarantee.
DIN 7 defines a parallel (cylindrical) dowel pin, ground to tight diametral tolerance across its full length, with a small chamfer at each end to aid insertion. The German industry standard has been carried forward largely unchanged into ISO 2338 for unhardened parallel pins, while ISO 8734 covers the hardened and ground version most commonly specified for jigs, fixtures, and precision tooling that see repeated insertion cycles.
