Monel K-500 Fasteners:
A Comprehensive Guide
Mumbai · India
How K-500 Solves Monel 400’s One Real Limitation
Monel 400 is roughly two-thirds nickel and one-third copper, and that composition gives it excellent resistance to seawater and hydrofluoric acid — but its strength, in the annealed condition most nickel-copper alloys are supplied in, is genuinely modest compared to what many marine and oil field fastening applications actually need. K-500 was developed specifically to close that gap, by adding small amounts of aluminum (roughly 2.5-3.5%) and titanium (roughly 0.35-0.85%) to the same nickel-copper base.
Those additions allow K-500 to be age-hardened — a controlled heat treatment causes the aluminum and titanium to form fine precipitates throughout the alloy’s structure, roughly doubling its strength compared to Monel 400 in the annealed state, without meaningfully compromising the underlying corrosion resistance that made the nickel-copper base valuable to begin with. The result is a fastener alloy that retains Monel 400’s genuine strengths — seawater resistance, non-magnetic behavior, and good galling resistance against stainless steel — while adding the mechanical strength to actually hold a highly loaded joint together.
Akbar Fasteners Pvt. Ltd. exports to over 50 countries, and our Monel K-500 fastener range is manufactured with controlled age-hardening heat treatment, verified by hardness and tensile testing under our ISO 9001:2015 quality system.
Where Monel K-500 Fasteners: A Comprehensive Guide
High Strength With Monel-Level Corrosion Resistance
Age hardening roughly doubles strength over Monel 400 while retaining excellent seawater and acid resistance.
Non-Magnetic Even After Hardening
Remains non-magnetic despite the age hardening treatment, critical for instrumentation and sensitive equipment.
Good Galling Resistance
Resists thread galling against stainless steel better than many stainless-on-stainless assemblies do.
Decades of Marine & Oil Field Track Record
Long-established service history in demanding subsea and marine hardware applications worldwide.

Monel K-500 vs Monel 400 vs 17-4 PH Stainless
K-500 is often compared against its own softer parent alloy and against a stainless age-hardening alternative solving a related problem. The comparison below is the one we walk through with buyers before quoting, so the material actually matches the corrosion and magnetic requirements rather than habit.
| Property | Monel K-500 | Monel 400 | 17-4 PH Stainless |
|---|---|---|---|
| UNS Designation | N05500 | N04400 | S17400 |
| Base Chemistry | Ni-Cu, Al+Ti hardened | Ni-Cu, annealed | Fe-Cr-Ni, Cu hardened |
