Anatomy of a Hex Cap Nut — Closed Where Every Other Nut Is Open

A hex cap nut (commonly called an acorn nut or dome nut) is a hex nut with the threaded bore closed off at one end by a rounded or domed cap, rather than running straight through the full body height the way a standard hex nut, heavy hex nut, or K-Lock nut does. The threaded section engages the bolt exactly as any hex nut would, but instead of the bolt’s tip potentially projecting out through the far face, it stops inside a blind cavity formed by the dome — fully enclosed, with no exposed metal, sharp cut thread, or protruding tip visible or touchable from outside the nut.

This single geometric change — closing one end — delivers three distinct benefits simultaneously, each valuable in different applications. First, it eliminates the injury and snagging risk of an exposed sharp-cut thread end, which is why cap nuts are the default specification on playground equipment, gym equipment, railings, and any public-facing hardware where bare skin or clothing might contact the fastener. Second, it seals the otherwise-exposed cut thread end away from moisture and atmosphere, reducing the corrosion initiation point that a bare thread tip represents. Third, the smooth rounded dome gives a genuinely finished, decorative appearance wherever visible fastener aesthetics matter — furniture, fixtures, automotive trim, and architectural hardware.

None of this comes for free, however — because the bore is blind rather than through, the available internal depth inside the dome is finite and must be respected: the bolt must be short enough, and the internal cavity long enough, that the bolt’s tip never contacts the inside of the dome before the nut’s bearing face fully seats against the clamped material. Eliminates Injury Risk From Exposed Sharp Thread

A bolt’s cut thread end, left exposed past a standard through-hole nut, presents a genuine snagging and minor-cut hazard to skin, clothing, and cables that brush against it. Playground equipment, gym and fitness apparatus, public railings, and any hardware accessible to bare skin routinely specify cap nuts specifically to remove this hazard entirely by enclosing the tip inside the dome.

Seals the Otherwise-Exposed Thread End From Corrosion

A cut thread end on a through-bolt is a fresh, often unprotected metal surface even when the rest of the fastener is finished or plated — a natural corrosion initiation point, particularly outdoors or in humid environments. A cap nut’s closed dome physically shields that exposed tip from moisture and atmosphere, meaningfully extending the service life of the exposed connection point.

Same Hex Wrenching as Any Standard Hex Nut

Despite the closed top, the hex body below the dome is dimensioned to accept the same standard wrench and socket sizes as an equivalent hex nut — installation and removal require no special tooling beyond what’s already used across the rest of a hex fastener family, keeping the decorative or protective benefit essentially “free” from a tooling standpoint.

The Bolt Length Trap — Why a “Tight” Cap Nut Can Still Mean a Loose Joint

Every through-hole nut on our site shares one convenient property: if the bolt is too long, the excess simply protrudes out the far side — untidy perhaps, but harmless to the joint’s actual clamping force. A cap nut removes that safety margin entirely. Because the bore is blind, there is a hard physical limit to how far the bolt can advance into the nut before its tip contacts the inside of the dome.

If the bolt is too long for the specific cap nut being used, the bolt’s tip bottoms out against the dome’s interior before the nut’s hex face fully seats down against the clamped material. At that point, continuing to turn the wrench does not increase clamping force at all — it simply pushes the bolt tip harder against the inside of the dome, potentially deforming the cap or stripping the last engaged threads, while the actual joint beneath the nut face remains loose, with a visible gap that a quick glance can easily miss. The nut can feel “tight” to the installer’s wrench while the joint itself is providing little or no real clamping force — a false-tight condition unique to blind-bore fasteners.

Avoiding this requires confirming, before installation, that the bolt’s exposed length beyond the clamped material’s far face is shorter than the cap nut’s internal blind-bore depth, with a small margin to spare. This is a straightforward calculation, but it is a genuinely different verification step from anything required when specifying a through-hole nut — where bolt length only needs to be “long enough,” never carefully bounded on the upper end as well.
