Akbar Fasteners Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai — ISO 9001:2015 certified manufacturer of hollow hex bolts (hex-head banjo bolts) to DIN 7643. A standard external hex head bolt drilled with an axial through-bore and cross-drilled radial ports — the same fluid-passage function as a hollow Allen bolt, but driven by an open-end or ring spanner rather than an internal socket key. The correct choice where high tightening torque and open wrench clearance matter more than compact head profile. Carbon steel Grade 8.8/10.9, Stainless 316L, and Brass. M6–M24. Full MTC, NABL. How a Hollow Hex Bolt Works — Same Fluid Path, Different Head Drive

Anatomy of a Hollow Hex Bolt — External Hex Head, Axial Bore, Radial Port

A hollow hex bolt shares the identical internal fluid architecture as a hollow Allen bolt — an axial bore running the length of the shank, connected to one or more radial cross-drilled ports near the head, sealed by copper crush washers at the banjo fitting interface. The only difference is the drive feature on top: a hollow hex bolt has a standard external hexagon head, driven by an open-end spanner, ring spanner, or socket from the outside, rather than an internal Allen key engaging a socket recess.

This single difference in drive geometry changes where and how the bolt is used. A hex head can accept significantly higher applied torque without deformation or stripping, because the wrench engages the full outer hex geometry rather than the smaller internal socket recess — the same reason a standard hex bolt outperforms a socket cap screw at high torque. External hex drive also allows wrench access from the side in situations where there isn’t enough clearance above the bolt head for a socket wrench or Allen key to be inserted axially.

The trade-off is head size: a hex head bolt has a larger head diameter and height than an equivalent socket head, because the wrenching flats need to be on the outside of the head rather than recessed inside it. Where axial clearance above the bolt is tight but radial (side) clearance is available for a spanner, hollow hex bolts are the correct choice. Where the reverse is true — tight radial clearance but open access from above — hollow Allen (socket) bolts are preferred.

The Drive Geometry Decision — Hex Head vs Socket Head

Hollow Hex Bolt vs Hollow Allen Bolt — When to Specify Each

Both types share the identical axial bore and radial port fluid architecture. The choice between them comes down entirely to clearance geometry and torque requirement at the installation point.

External Drive · Higher Torque Capacity

Hollow Hex Bolt (This Page)

External hexagon head engaged by an open-end spanner, ring spanner, or hex socket from outside the head. The full hex geometry accepts higher applied torque than an equivalent socket head without stripping the drive feature — important on larger bore sizes and higher-pressure hydraulic circuits where a substantial tightening torque is specified.

Specify for: Applications with side (radial) wrench clearance but limited axial clearance above the head, higher-torque hydraulic and industrial fittings, larger bore sizes (M16 and above) where torque capacity matters, and installations serviced with standard open-end tools rather than hex keys.
Internal Drive · Compact Head Profile

Hollow Allen Bolt (Socket Head)

Internal hex socket recess engaged by an Allen key or hex bit from directly above the bolt. The compact head diameter is the primary advantage — critical in confined engine bays, motorcycle brake calipers, and tight assembly spaces where a hex head’s wider wrenching flats would not clear surrounding components.

Specify for: Confined-space brake caliper connections (the dominant automotive/motorcycle application), tight engine bay hydraulic fittings, and any location with open axial access from above but insufficient radial clearance for a spanner to be swung. View Hollow Allen Bolts →
Four Reasons Engineers Specify Hollow Hex Bolts

Why Hollow Hex Bolts — Torque, Access, and Serviceability

01

Higher Torque Capacity Than Socket Drive

Full hex geometry engages the wrench across six full flats rather than the smaller internal socket recess of an Allen-drive bolt. For higher-pressure hydraulic circuits and larger bore sizes (M16–M24) where the specified tightening torque is significant, hex drive resists cam-out and drive-feature stripping better than an equivalent socket head at the same torque level.

02

Side Access Where Axial Clearance Is Restricted

A spanner engages the hex head from the side, requiring only radial swing clearance rather than vertical space above the bolt to insert a hex key or socket driver. In machinery with components mounted directly above a hydraulic fitting, or in assembly sequences where the bolt must be tightened before an overhead component is installed, hex drive is often the only geometrically viable option.

03

Standard Tooling — No Hex Key Required

Every mechanic’s toolbox has open-end and ring spanners in every common size; a hex key set specific to socket head sizes is a separate tool requirement. For field service and general industrial maintenance where the technician may not carry a full hex key set, hollow hex bolts can be serviced with the same standard spanners used throughout the rest of the machine or vehicle.

04

Identical Fluid-Passage Function to Hollow Allen Bolts

The axial bore, radial port, and copper crush washer sealing system are dimensionally and functionally identical to hollow Allen bolts — the same bore diameter and port sizing per DIN 7643 apply regardless of which head drive is specified. This means the hydraulic performance (flow rate, pressure rating) is unaffected by the choice between hex and socket drive; the decision is purely about installation access and tooling.

Hollow Hex Bolt Standards Coverage

DIN Standards
DIN 7643
The primary German standard covers both hex socket (Allen) and external hex drive hollow bolts with axial bore and radial cross-drilling for fluid passage. The dimensional standard specifies thread size, standard bore diameter, and head dimensions for M6–M24 across both drive variants — the hex-drive version simply substitutes an external hexagon head geometry for the internal socket recess, with identical bore and port specifications.
DIN 7643M6–M24Hex Drive
DIN Standards
DIN 7603
Covers sealing washers (crush washers) in copper and other soft metals, dimensioned to match hollow hex bolt shank diameters — the same washer specification used across both the hollow hex and hollow Allen bolt ranges, since the banjo fitting geometry and sealing requirement are identical regardless of head drive type.

ISO Mechanical
ISO 898-1 / ISO 3506
ISO 898-1 defines the property class system (8.8, 10.9) for carbon and alloy steel hollow hex bolts. ISO 3506-1 defines the A4 property class for stainless steel variants used in fuel and corrosive-fluid service. The larger hex head geometry allows these bolts to be tested and marked with property class per standard hex bolt convention, unlike some compact socket-head variants with limited head marking surface.

Torque Standards
ISO 898-7 / Torque-Tension
ISO 898-7 covers torque testing for hex bolts to verify the relationship between applied wrench torque and resulting bolt tension/preload. Because hollow hex bolts are frequently specified in higher-torque hydraulic applications precisely for their torque capacity advantage over socket drive, torque-tension verification testing is available on request for critical hydraulic circuit applications where preload consistency affects joint sealing reliability.

Bore & Port Gauging
Every hollow hex bolt production lot is gauged for axial bore diameter, bore concentricity to the thread axis, and radial port position and diameter — the same flow-critical dimensional inspection applied to the hollow Allen bolt range. Flow-critical applications receive 100% bore inspection rather than sample-based AQL inspection.
