Why Monel K500 for Threaded Rods
Monel K500 (UNS N05500) is the age-hardened variant of Monel 400 — produced by adding aluminium (2.3–3.15%) and titanium (0.35–0.85%) and applying a two-stage heat treatment: solution anneal at 980°C followed by age hardening at 593°C. The result is a Ni₃(Al,Ti) gamma-prime precipitate structure that raises tensile strength to ≥1000 MPa — more than double standard Monel 400 — while retaining the Ni-Cu alloy’s permanent immunity to seawater, HF acid, and chloride stress corrosion cracking.
For threaded rods, this combination is decisive. Marine hanger rods supporting heavy equipment in splash zones need both the corrosion immunity of Monel and the tensile strength to carry sustained loads without relaxation. K500 threaded rods in offshore platform cable trays, subsea pipeline support clamps, and desalination vessel tie rods routinely outlast 316L rods by a factor of 5–10× in seawater service. Compared to Hastelloy B3 stud bolts for strongly reducing acid service, K500 rods are the choice where the primary corrosion risk is seawater or HF acid with moderate reducing acid exposure.

Permanent Seawater Immunity
Monel K500 rods show no measurable corrosion in seawater at any velocity, temperature, or tidal condition. The Ni-Cu matrix is thermodynamically stable against chloride attack — no protective film to maintain, no risk of under-deposit corrosion.

≥1000 MPa UTS with ≥690 MPa yield — allows smaller-diameter rods to carry the same loads as larger Monel 400 or 316L rods, reducing assembly weight in offshore and naval installations.
HF Acid Resistance
Near-immunity to hydrofluoric acid at all concentrations — critical for petroleum refinery alkylation unit hanger rods where HF vapour exposure would destroy stainless steel rods. No grade of stainless steel matches Monel’s HF resistance.
Non-Magnetic
Low magnetic permeability qualifies K500 rods for minesweeper vessel structural tie rods, MRI facility structural support, and proximity-sensitive offshore instrumentation racks where ferromagnetic fasteners would cause interference.
NACE MR0175 Compliance
Monel K500 threaded rods comply with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 for sour service (H₂S) applications within specified hardness limits — qualifying them for subsea tie rods in H₂S-containing wellbore environments.
