Because the barrel nut must be free to rotate briefly within its drilled hole to align its transverse threaded bore with the incoming bolt, but must then resist rotating once the bolt is tightened, the frictional fit between the barrel nut’s outer cylindrical surface and the drilled hole wall is what genuinely prevents it from spinning under the reactive torque of tightening. This is why the drilled hole’s diameter must be sized precisely to the barrel nut’s outer diameter, not simply close enough, since thread engagement plays no role in resisting this rotation.

A genuine, honest limitation is worth stating plainly. Because a hole drilled even slightly oversized removes the friction the barrel nut depends on, buyers must confirm the drilled hole diameter is genuinely matched to the specific barrel nut’s outer diameter tolerance before installation, not assume any similarly sized hole will work. Once a barrel nut spins in an oversized or worn hole, achieving proper clamping torque becomes genuinely unreliable, and the hole itself can enlarge further with repeated attempts. Buyers should also confirm the barrel nut is installed with its transverse bore genuinely aligned square to the incoming bolt, since even a slightly rotated barrel nut can cause cross-threading or an angled, weakened thread engagement.
