ISO 9001:2015 · Inch and Metric Are Genuinely Not the Same System
SAE Grade 5 and ISO Metric 8.8 Are Often Called “Equivalent”  ·  But the Underlying Thread Form Is Genuinely Not Interchangeable Regardless of Any Strength Similarity

American SAE Standards

Akbar Fasteners Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai — ISO 9001:2015 certified manufacturer and exporter working to SAE fastener standards. SAE grades and ISO metric classes aren’t interchangeable in thread form or strength correspondence — an “equivalent” grade table doesn’t make them a drop-in substitute.
Genuine Mechanism SAE J429 Genuinely Governs Unified Inch Thread, Not Metric

A Genuine Structural Fact About Two Fundamentally Separate Systems

Why “Equivalent Grade” Genuinely Isn’t “Interchangeable”

SAE J429 defines fastener grades, Grade 2, Grade 5, Grade 8, specifically for fasteners using the Unified inch thread series, UNC or UNF. This is a genuinely separate system from the metric ISO property class system, 4.6, 8.8, 10.9, 12.9, used for metric threaded fasteners.

Here is why this matters. Because SAE grades and ISO metric property classes are governed by different specifications, tested to different proof load and tensile requirements, and manufactured to fundamentally different thread forms, a bolt correctly marked to SAE Grade 5 is genuinely not a drop-in substitute for an ISO metric 8.8 bolt of “equivalent” nominal size, even though the two are often casually treated as roughly comparable in strength. The actual thread form, Unified inch versus ISO metric, is fundamentally not interchangeable regardless of any strength similarity. Mixing SAE and metric hardware in the same joint can even physically thread partially due to close but not identical thread pitch and angle, then bind, strip, or fail to generate proper preload, despite initially seeming to fit.

A genuine, honest limitation is worth stating plainly. Because casual “equivalent grade” tables comparing SAE and ISO metric classes are widely available and genuinely useful for general strength comparison, buyers should confirm they are not using such a table to justify actually substituting one system’s hardware for the other in a real joint. The tables compare approximate strength only, not thread compatibility, and a genuinely correct joint requires matching both the thread system, inch versus metric, and the specific grade or class within that system, not simply matching an approximate strength number across systems.

Akbar Fasteners Pvt. Ltd. exports to over 50 countries, and our SAE-graded fasteners are manufactured and verified for thread form and mechanical property compliance under our ISO 9001:2015 quality system.

A Note on Confirming Thread System Before Comparing Grades

Please confirm whether your joint genuinely uses Unified inch or ISO metric threads before referencing any equivalent-grade comparison — strength similarity does not imply thread interchangeability.
