Allen Bolts
Why the Internal Socket Genuinely Shrinks the Head
Allen bolts, or socket head cap screws, use an internal hex recess machined into a compact, cylindrical head, rather than an external hex. This is a genuinely different head architecture from standard hex bolts, not simply a different drive style bolted onto the same shape.
Here is why this matters. Because the wrenching feature is recessed inside the head rather than requiring extra material for an external hex’s flat-to-flat width, the head diameter can be genuinely much smaller than an equivalent external hex bolt. This smaller head diameter allows the bolt to fit into a smaller counterbore or recessed hole, genuinely enabling flush or near-flush mounting where an external hex head simply wouldn’t physically fit. Additionally, the internal hex socket is typically machined into a taller, more compact head that provides genuinely deeper tool engagement relative to the fastener’s outer diameter than an external hex, allowing higher torque to be applied without stripping. This combination of compact size and high torque capacity is why Allen bolts are the standard choice in high-strength alloy steel where tight, flush, high-torque assembly is genuinely required.
A genuine, honest limitation is worth stating plainly. Because the internal hex socket relies on contact across its internal flats rather than the broader external gripping surface of a hex head, the socket itself is genuinely more prone to camming out or rounding if the correct-size, undamaged hex key isn’t used, or if excessive torque is applied with a worn key. Unlike an external hex head, which can often still be gripped with pliers or an adjustable wrench if the drive is damaged, a rounded-out internal hex socket genuinely has no alternative gripping method once damaged, making removal of a stripped Allen bolt genuinely more difficult than a stripped external hex bolt.
Akbar Fasteners Pvt. Ltd. exports to over 50 countries, and our Allen bolt range is manufactured and verified for socket dimension and torque compliance under our ISO 9001:2015 quality system.
A Note on Confirming Counterbore Size & Torque/Key Quality
Please confirm your counterbore dimensions and torque requirement when requesting a quote — using the correctly sized, undamaged hex key genuinely matters, since a rounded internal socket has no backup removal method.

Allen Bolts vs Hex Bolts — Quick Reference
Confirming whether your application genuinely needs a compact, flush-fitting head, or a backup gripping option in case the drive gets damaged. This table is the quick reference we use with buyers before quoting.
| Aspect | Allen Bolts | Hex Bolts |
|---|---|---|
| Head Diameter | Genuinely smaller, fits tight counterbores | Larger, needs external clearance |
| Tool Engagement Depth | Genuinely deeper relative to head size | Shallower, broader external grip |
| Backup Grip If Drive Is Damaged | Genuinely none once rounded | Genuinely possible with pliers/wrench |
