Why So Many Screw Types Genuinely Exist
It’s tempting to think of a screw as one general fastener category with different sizes — but the actual mechanical job varies enormously across the family. A machine screw threads into an already-tapped hole or nut, expecting the mating thread to already exist. A tapping screw does the opposite entirely, cutting or forming its own thread as it drives into sheet metal or plastic that had no thread there before. A wood screw does something different again, with a tapered shank and coarse thread designed to grip fibrous wood rather than a machined metal hole.
Cap screws, set screws, and shoulder screws each solve a further distinct problem — a cap screw tensions two machined parts together under high clamping force, a set screw locks a component onto a shaft using pure point pressure with no head at all, and a shoulder screw acts as a precision-ground pivot point rather than a clamping fastener. A thumb screw solves yet another problem: tool-free hand installation wherever repeated adjustment matters more than maximum torque.
Akbar Fasteners Pvt. Ltd. exports to over 50 countries, and our screw range spans all six of these genuinely distinct categories, verified under our ISO 9001:2015 quality system.
Where This Category Genuinely Applies
Correct Screw for the Actual Function
Choosing the right one of six types avoids the wrong thread engagement or holding mechanism entirely.
Genuine Self-Cutting Capability
Tapping screws form their own thread reliably in sheet metal without needing a pre-tapped hole.
Full Precision Options Available
Cap and shoulder screws provide high clamping force and precision pivot function respectively.
Verified Torque & Dimensional Precision
Batch testing confirms genuine thread engagement and torque capacity for the ordered type.

Confirming what job the screw actually needs to do — thread into existing material, cut its own thread, clamp, lock, pivot, or hand-turn — narrows the choice immediately. This table is the quick reference we use with buyers before quoting.
| Actual Job Needed | Screw Type | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Thread into an existing tapped hole/nut | Machine Screw | FF-S-210 |
| Create its own thread in sheet metal | Tapping Screw | FF-S-200 |
| Grip fibrous wood material | Wood Screw | FF-S-111 |
| Tension two machined parts, high clamp force | Cap Screw | FF-S-107 |
| Lock a component onto a shaft | Set Screw | FF-S-92 |
| Act as a precision pivot or bearing point | Shoulder Screw | FF-S-86 |
