Why Shank Fit Decides Precision and Cost
A general-purpose bolt uses a standard clearance-fit shank in a straight drilled hole — the joint’s shear resistance comes primarily from clamping friction between the plates, and that’s genuinely sufficient for the large majority of structural and mechanical assembly. It’s also the least expensive tier, because a straight drilled hole and a standard shank tolerance are both fast and inexpensive to produce.
A precision aerospace bolt like NAS6603 tightens that tolerance considerably — the shank and matched washer dimensions are held to aircraft-grade precision, verified under defined NASM1312 test methods, because aerospace structural joints simply can’t tolerate the dimensional variability a general commercial bolt allows.
A close tolerance bolt like MIL-B-857 goes further still — the shank is precision-ground for a near-zero-clearance fit into a reamed hole, letting the bolt itself carry shear load directly rather than relying on friction, at a cost premium that’s only worth paying where the joint genuinely cannot tolerate any slip. Working out which tier a given joint actually needs — not defaulting to the most expensive option out of caution — is most of the value in getting a bolt specification right the first time.
Akbar Fasteners Pvt. Ltd. exports to over 50 countries, and our stud and bolt range spans all three precision tiers, verified under our ISO 9001:2015 quality system.
Where This Category Genuinely Applies
Correct Tier for the Actual Joint
Choosing general, precision, or close tolerance by genuine need avoids overpaying or underspecifying.
Consistent Material Grade Documentation
MIL-DTL-1222’s alloy/CRES grouping keeps a mixed fastener kit traceable to the same material story.
Genuine Aerospace Precision
NAS6603 provides tight tolerance matched precisely to standard aerospace washer dimensions.
Verified Shank & Material Properties
Batch dimensional and mechanical testing confirms genuine tolerance and strength for the ordered tier.

Confirming actual joint requirements before defaulting to the most expensive tier avoids both overpaying and underspecifying. This table is the quick reference we use with buyers before quoting.
| Aspect | General (FF-B-588) | Aerospace Precision (NAS6603) | Close Tolerance (MIL-B-857) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shank Fit | Standard clearance | Tight aerospace tolerance | Near-zero, reamed hole |
| Shear Load Path | Clamping friction | Clamping + tight fit | Direct through shank |
| Typical Cost Tier | Lowest | Moderate-high | Highest |
