A Type I nut achieves its prevailing-torque locking action through a nylon insert ring set into the top of the nut — as the bolt or screw threads through, it deforms slightly around the nylon, creating consistent friction that resists loosening under vibration without any dependence on full nut-to-bolt clamping tension alone.
That nylon insert is exactly why the 250°F limit exists — beyond that temperature, the nylon begins to lose the mechanical properties that make it grip reliably, which is why a separate Type II variant exists using an all-metal deformed-thread locking feature rated to 450°F for higher-temperature aerospace zones like engine-adjacent structure. Specifying Type I where the assembly will actually see higher sustained temperature is a genuine and avoidable failure mode — the locking feature simply degrades faster than the rest of the fastener.
