MIL-N-25027 covers self-locking nuts designed to hold prevailing torque reliably in aerospace and defense assembly — nuts that resist self-loosening under sustained vibration through a built-in locking feature rather than relying on clamping tension alone. The specification defines two distinct temperature classes under one family, because a single locking mechanism can’t realistically serve both a cool cabin interior application and a hot engine-adjacent structural zone equally well.
That’s the core reason this specification splits into Type I and Type II rather than offering one universal nut — Type I uses a nylon insert that provides excellent locking friction but has a genuine upper temperature limit around 250°F before the material begins to degrade, while Type II abandons the nylon entirely in favor of an all-metal deformed-thread locking feature rated to 450°F for hotter zones where nylon simply wouldn’t survive. Specifying which type an assembly needs is the practical decision that matters more here than any other single detail.
