FF-W-92 vs FF-W-100 — Why They’re Not Interchangeable
FF-W-92 and FF-W-100 both cover washers under US Federal Specification, but they solve genuinely different problems. FF-W-100 covers plain flat washers — flat discs that spread clamping load over a wider bearing area and protect the surface under a nut or bolt head. They have no inherent locking function; a plain flat washer under vibration will happily let the joint loosen right along with it.
FF-W-92 exists specifically to address that gap — it covers washers built with a deliberate mechanical feature designed to resist self-loosening: either a helical spring washer that stays under axial compression to maintain some residual clamping force, or a tooth lock washer with teeth that bite into the mating surfaces to resist rotation. Specifying the wrong one of these two federal specs for a joint that actually needs vibration resistance is a genuine and avoidable mistake — a flat FF-W-100 washer simply does not do the job a lock washer is built for.
Akbar Fasteners Pvt. Ltd. exports to over 50 countries, and our FF-W-92 lock washer range is manufactured across helical spring and tooth types, verified by mechanical and dimensional testing under our ISO 9001:2015 quality system.
Where FF-W-92 Genuinely Applies
Vibration & Cyclic Load Resistance
Purpose-built to help maintain clamping force and resist self-loosening under repeated vibration.
Unambiguous Government Specification
Precise type, series, and material designation removes ambiguity in federal purchase orders.
Broad Material Coverage
Carbon steel, stainless steel, and phosphor bronze options across the full series range.
Verified Spring Rate & Hardness
Batch testing confirms genuine spring characteristics, not just correct outer dimensions.
Lock Washer Types Explained
Split Ring Lock Washers
A single-turn helical spring that stays partially compressed under the fastener, resisting loosening through residual spring tension.
Internal Tooth Lock Washers
Teeth angled inward bite into the fastener head/nut and mating surface, resisting rotation directly.
External Tooth Lock Washers
Teeth around the outer edge, useful where the bearing surface under the head is small relative to washer size.
Countersunk Tooth Washers
Internal tooth design shaped to seat correctly under a countersunk or flat head screw.
A Genuinely Honest Note on Lock Washer Performance
Spring Washers Are Not a Substitute for Correct Torque
A helical spring lock washer supplements a correctly torqued joint — it doesn’t compensate for under-tightening or a poorly designed joint.
Tooth Washers Can Mark Softer Surfaces
The biting teeth that provide locking action will visibly mark softer or coated surfaces — worth considering for cosmetic or coated assemblies.
Engineering Opinion Has Shifted Over Time
Some modern engineering guidance favors correctly torqued joints with thread-locking compound over spring washers for critical vibration resistance — evaluate per application.
Match the Series to the Actual Load
Light, medium, heavy, and extra heavy series exist because one spring rate genuinely doesn’t fit every joint — confirm the right series for your load.

Series Designations Under FF-W-92
Helical spring lock washers are manufactured in different series based on wire cross-section and spring rate. Choosing the right series matches the washer’s resistance to the actual joint load and vibration profile.
| Series | Relative Spring Rate | Typical Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Lowest | Lighter-duty joints, small fasteners |
| Regular | Standard | General-purpose use, most common series |
| Heavy | Higher | Higher vibration or load environments |
| Extra Heavy | Highest | Severe vibration, heavy machinery applications |
