Why Choose Hastelloy Fasteners And What Makes Hastelloy Different
Hastelloy’s defining feature is molybdenum content well beyond what most other nickel alloys carry — often 15% or more depending on the specific grade, compared to roughly 9% in Inconel 625 or 2-3% in standard 316 stainless. That molybdenum is what gives the family its genuinely exceptional resistance to reducing acid environments — hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and other aggressive process chemistries that will pit or actively dissolve stainless steel and even attack most other nickel alloys over time.
That level of protection isn’t needed for most applications, which is exactly why Hastelloy carries a premium price well above stainless, and often above Inconel and Monel as well. The honest case for choosing it comes down to a specific question: is your process actually exposing the fastener to the kind of severe reducing acid chemistry that stainless or a lower-molybdenum nickel alloy would fail in within a reasonable service life? If the answer is genuinely yes, Hastelloy earns its cost by avoiding repeated replacement, unplanned shutdowns, and the safety risk of an unexpected fastener failure in a corrosive process line.
