What We Mean by “Washers”
A washer sits between a fastener and the joint surface, and depending on its design it can serve very different functions: distributing clamping load over a wider area to prevent surface damage, providing a calibrated spring force in a bolted stack, resisting loosening under vibration, or bridging an oversized clearance hole. Treating “washer” as a single generic part is where a lot of joint design mistakes start.

Choosing the Right Washer Type
A plain flat washer and a spring lock washer look similar in a parts bin, but they solve completely different problems — and a Belleville washer solves a third problem neither of them touches. The real decision is whether you need load distribution, vibration resistance, or a calibrated, reusable spring force in the joint.
