Why Threaded Rod Threaded Rod Weight Chart mm to kg
Threaded rod is almost always priced, quoted, and shipped by weight, not by length alone — freight cost, container loading calculations, and even per-kilogram material pricing all depend on getting the diameter-to-weight conversion right before an order goes out. Get the estimate wrong on a large project and the error compounds fast: a bill of quantities based on the wrong weight per metre can throw off a freight quote or a project budget by a meaningful margin once you’re talking about tonnes of material rather than a handful of rods.
The calculation itself is straightforward geometry — weight per metre is a function of cross-sectional area (based on nominal diameter) multiplied by material density. What changes the result meaningfully is the material: stainless steel is roughly 1% denser than carbon steel, which sounds trivial until you’re calculating the weight of a full container load, at which point that small density difference becomes a real number on a shipping invoice.
Akbar Fasteners Pvt. Ltd. manufactures threaded rod across both material types, and this chart reflects the same density figures — 7.85 g/cm³ for carbon/alloy steel, 7.93 g/cm³ for austenitic stainless (304/316) — that we use internally when quoting and packing export shipments.

Calculated as Weight (kg/m) = (π/4) × d(mm)² × density(g/cm³) ÷ 1000, using density 7.85 g/cm³ for carbon/alloy steel and 7.93 g/cm³ for austenitic stainless steel (304/316). Figures use nominal diameter for estimation purposes — actual weight may vary slightly based on thread form, root diameter, and manufacturing tolerance. Confirm exact weight against your purchase order for final invoicing.
How to Use This Chart
Find Your Nominal Diameter
Locate the metric size (M6 through M48) matching the threaded rod diameter specified in your drawing or order.
Choose Steel or Stainless
Read across to the correct material column — the two densities differ by roughly 1%, which matters at volume.
Multiply by Total Length
Multiply the kg/m figure by your total required length in metres to estimate total weight for freight or quoting purposes.
