Structural Bolts
Why a Correctly Torqued Bolt Can Still Slip
Structural bolts are genuinely specified into two fundamentally different connection types — slip-critical, or friction-type, connections, where the design assumes the connected plies do not move relative to each other and load is transferred entirely through friction generated by clamping force between the mating surfaces, and bearing-type connections, where some slip is permitted and load is ultimately transferred through the bolt shank bearing directly against the side of the hole.
Here is why this matters. Because these two connection types transfer load through genuinely different physical mechanisms, the surface condition of the mating faces — paint, mill scale, galvanizing, rust — matters enormously for a slip-critical connection, since friction depends directly on the surface’s coefficient of friction, but is comparatively far less critical for a bearing-type connection, since load transfer there depends on the bolt shank bearing against the hole rather than surface friction.
A genuine, honest limitation is worth stating plainly. Because the required surface preparation is entirely dependent on which connection type the engineer specified, a structural bolt’s mechanical properties alone say nothing about whether a given joint’s actual surface preparation meets the requirement for a slip-critical connection. Buyers must confirm which connection type is specified before proceeding with surface preparation and installation, since applying inadequate surface prep to a joint genuinely designed as slip-critical can leave the connection able to slip under load even though correctly torqued or pretensioned bolts are installed.
Akbar Fasteners Pvt. Ltd. exports to over 50 countries, and our structural bolt range is manufactured and verified for tensile and hardness compliance under our ISO 9001:2015 quality system.
A Note on Confirming Connection Type Before Surface Preparation
Please confirm whether your joint is specified slip-critical or bearing-type before proceeding with surface preparation and installation.

Slip-Critical vs Bearing-Type — Quick Reference
Confirming whether your joint genuinely relies on friction alone, or genuinely permits some slip with the bolt shank bearing on the hole. This table is the quick reference we use with buyers before quoting.
| Aspect | Slip-Critical Connection | Bearing-Type Connection |
|---|---|---|
| Load Transfer Mechanism | Genuinely friction at the faying surface | Genuinely bolt shank bearing on the hole |
| Surface Condition Sensitivity | Genuinely critical | Genuinely far less critical |
| Permitted Slip Under Load | Genuinely none, by design | Genuinely some, by design |
