What Are Stainless Steel Washers
A washer’s core job is to distribute the clamping load of a bolt or screw over a larger surface area than the bolt head or nut alone would cover — protecting the joined material from crushing, marring, or being pulled through, and giving the fastener a flat, consistent bearing surface to torque against. That single description covers a surprisingly wide range of actual designs, each solving a slightly different version of the problem.
Flat washers are the baseline: a simple flat ring that spreads load and provides a smooth bearing surface, most commonly to DIN 125 or ASME B18.21.1 dimensions. Spring washers (also called lock washers) add a split or curved profile that acts like a weak spring, maintaining axial tension in the joint to resist loosening under vibration — DIN 127 defines the split-ring type most commonly used. Fender washers have a significantly larger outer diameter relative to their bore than standard flat washers, spreading load across a much wider area — useful on soft, thin, or damage-prone materials like sheet metal or fiberglass where a standard washer would still allow local deformation.
Akbar Fasteners Pvt. Ltd. exports to over 50 countries, and our washer range is manufactured in 304 and 316 stainless steel with the same ISO 9001:2015 quality system and full mill test documentation as our bolt and nut range.
Where the Right Washer Genuinely Protects the Joint
Consistent Load Distribution
Flat, uniform bearing surface machined to tolerance so clamping load spreads evenly rather than concentrating at high spots.
Vibration Loosening Resistance
Spring washer profiles gauged to maintain effective spring tension across the specified deflection range.
Corrosion-Matched to the Joint
304 or 316 grade selection to match the bolt and nut material, avoiding galvanic mismatch in the assembly.
ISO 9001:2015 Batch Consistency
Every batch gauged for thickness, flatness, and outer/inner diameter before dispatch, with full documentation on request.
Types of Stainless Steel Washers
Flat Washers
Standard flat ring washers for general-purpose load distribution and bearing surface protection.
Spring / Lock Washers
Split-ring washers that maintain axial preload tension to resist vibration loosening.
Fender Washers
Large outer diameter washers for spreading load across soft, thin, or damage-prone materials.
Serrated / Tooth Lock Washers
Internal or external tooth profiles that bite into the mating surface for additional anti-rotation resistance.
Large Series Flat Washers
Wider flat washers than standard DIN 125, for oversized clearance holes or softer materials.
Special Bore / Shim Washers
Custom bore sizes and thicknesses machined to specific drawing dimensions for non-standard joints.
Flat vs Spring/Lock vs Fender Washers
Each washer type solves a different problem, and using the wrong one doesn’t necessarily fail immediately — it just means the joint isn’t protected the way it was meant to be. The comparison below is the one we walk through with buyers before quoting, so the washer type matches the actual joint condition.
| Property | Flat Washer | Spring/Lock Washer | Fender Washer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | DIN 125 / ASME B18.21.1 | DIN 127 | Oversized OD, no fixed standard |
| Primary Function | Load distribution & bearing surface | Vibration loosening resistance | Wide load spread on soft materials |
| Outer Diameter | Standard, close to bolt head | Standard, close to bolt head | Significantly larger than standard |
| Anti-Loosening Function | None | Yes — spring tension | None |
| Best Suited For | General bolted joints | Vibration-prone assemblies | Sheet metal, fiberglass, soft substrates |
| Relative Cost | Low | Low-Moderate | Low-Moderate |
