The Titanium Stabilisation Mechanism

SS 321 — Why Ti Eliminates Weld Zone Sensitisation

Stainless steel sensitisation is the corrosion failure mode that occurs when austenitic stainless steel is exposed to temperatures in the range 425–870°C — the sensitisation range. In this range, carbon in solution migrates to grain boundaries and combines with chromium to form chromium carbide (Cr₂₃C₆), precipitating at the grain boundary and creating a chromium-depleted zone (typically below 12% Cr) in the immediate vicinity of the grain boundary. This chromium-depleted zone is no longer stainless — it corrodes rapidly by intergranular attack (IGA) when the material is subsequently exposed to a corrosive environment.

The sensitisation mechanism is the reason standard 304 and 316 stainless steels fail by intergranular corrosion after welding when used in acid service, heat exchangers, or high-temperature chemical process equipment. The “L” designation (316L, 304L) addresses sensitisation by limiting carbon to ≤0.030% — reducing the amount of carbon available to form chromium carbides. But the “L” grades still contain some carbon, and for service in the 425–870°C range where the carbide precipitation rate is thermodynamically favoured, even “L” grades sensitise slowly over time.

SS 321 (UNS S32100) uses titanium stabilisation as the definitive solution: titanium has a much higher affinity for carbon than chromium does. By adding titanium in a ratio of at least 5 times the carbon content (Ti ≥ 5×C), all available carbon is preferentially captured as titanium carbide (TiC) — a stable precipitate that does not preferentially dissolve chromium from the grain boundary vicinity. With all carbon tied up as TiC, no chromium carbide can form, and sensitisation is eliminated regardless of time at temperature within the 321’s service range.

Temperature Service Map — Why 321 Is Specified

The sensitisation temperature range (425–870°C) is where standard 304/316 alloys are at risk of chromium carbide precipitation. SS 321’s titanium stabilisation eliminates this risk. The diagram shows the four temperature zones and which grades apply.

Cold/Ambient (<300°C): Any austenitic SS grade suitable — 304L, 316L, 321, 347 all acceptable.
Low HT (300–425°C): 304L and 316L still acceptable — carbide precipitation kinetics too slow to matter.
Sensitisation zone (425–870°C): Specify SS 321 (Ti-stabilised) or SS 347 (Nb-stabilised). Standard 304/316 will sensitise at weld HAZ. Even 304L/316L sensitise slowly in prolonged service above 425°C.
High temperature (>870°C): 321 approaches oxidation limit. Specify Inconel 600/601 or Incoloy 800H/800HT.

Why SS 321 — When Ti-Stabilisation Is the Specification

No HAZ Sensitisation — Weld-Safe at Temperature

The defining reason for 321: weld joints in 321 do not create chromium-depleted zones at the heat-affected zone. Heat exchangers, pressure vessels with welded nozzle connections, and fabricated equipment operating in the 425–870°C range are fastened with 321 to ensure the fastener heat-affected zone matches the weld sensitisation resistance of the parent metal.

Prolonged Service 425–870°C Without Degradation

Unlike 304L or 316L (which sensitise slowly even in low-carbon “L” grades above 425°C in extended service), 321’s titanium stabilisation remains effective indefinitely at temperature. For heat exchanger shell cover bolts, furnace structural connections, and steam reformer pigtail flanges operating for years at 500–700°C, 321 provides long-term reliability that “L” grades cannot.

ASME B8T Stud Bolt Specification — Heat Exchanger Standard

ASTM A193 B8T is the specific ASME stud bolt designation for SS 321 — used in ASME B16.5 pressure flanges on heat exchangers, pressure vessels, and process equipment operating in the 425–870°C range. Many heat exchanger specifications require B8T specifically (not B8 or B8M) when the equipment operates in the sensitisation range. Ti Ratio Verification — PMI Confirms Stabilisation

For 321 fasteners, PMI verification must confirm not just Cr/Ni content but also titanium content (≥5×C). Standard XRF PMI can detect Ti in SS 321 and confirm its presence above the minimum stabilisation ratio. Grade Selection — When 321, When 347, When Incoloy 800H

SS 321 vs 316L vs 347 vs Incoloy 800H

321 and 347 are both stabilised austenitic grades — 321 uses titanium, 347 uses niobium. The selection between them is driven by the specific service environment. For temperatures above 870°C, neither applies — move to Incoloy 800H.
