Anatomy of SMO 254 — Super Austenitic, Not Duplex
SMO 254 (UNS S31254) is a super austenitic stainless steel — meaning its microstructure is fully single-phase austenitic, exactly like our SS 316L range, but pushed to a dramatically higher alloy content, particularly molybdenum at roughly 6% alongside significant nitrogen and copper additions. This is a genuinely different metallurgical strategy from our super duplex range, which reaches its high corrosion resistance through a dual-phase austenite-ferrite structure rather than simply adding more alloy to a single-phase structure.
The practical result is that SMO 254 achieves a PREN in the range of 43–45 — directly comparable to super duplex — through a completely different route. Where super duplex’s ferrite phase contributes significant additional strength alongside its corrosion benefit, SMO 254’s single-phase austenitic structure instead delivers the toughness, weldability, and low-temperature behaviour characteristic of austenitic stainless steels generally, simply at a far higher corrosion-resistance level than standard grades like SS 316L can reach.
Neither route is universally “better” — they represent genuinely different trade-offs, covered in full detail immediately below, with the practical consequence that the correct choice between SMO 254 and super duplex depends on which secondary property (strength, or weldability and cryogenic toughness) actually matters most for a given application.
Why SMO 254 — Extreme Chloride Resistance, Austenitic Simplicity
PREN Comparable to Super Duplex
At roughly 43–45, SMO 254’s PREN sits alongside super duplex’s, delivering excellent chloride pitting and crevice corrosion resistance well beyond SS 316L’s typical ~25.
Excellent Weldability With No Phase Balance to Manage
Being fully austenitic like SS 316L, SMO 254 welds using familiar austenitic procedures without the controlled heat input duplex grades require to preserve their phase balance in the weld zone.
Retains Toughness at Low Temperature
Austenitic structures generally do not exhibit the ductile-to-brittle transition that ferrite-containing structures can show at low temperature, making SMO 254 a strong choice for cryogenic or cold-climate service.

Two Roads to High PREN — SMO 254 vs Super Duplex
SMO 254 and super duplex both reach a PREN above 40, but they get there by fundamentally different means, and the difference in their underlying microstructure carries real, practical consequences beyond the shared corrosion number. Super duplex earns its PREN partly through its dual-phase structure and partly through high chromium and molybdenum content, with the ferrite phase additionally contributing roughly double the yield strength of standard austenitic stainless.
SMO 254 earns an equally high PREN purely through alloy content within a single austenitic phase — no ferrite phase means no phase-balance to control during welding, no risk of secondary phase precipitation (such as sigma phase) if the material is held too long in certain intermediate temperature ranges during fabrication, and no ductile-to-brittle transition behaviour at low temperature that a ferrite-containing structure can exhibit.
The practical selection rule is straightforward: where the application specifically benefits from super duplex’s higher strength — allowing a smaller, lighter fastener at the same design load — super duplex is the correct choice. Where welding simplicity, predictable heat-affected-zone behaviour, or reliable low-temperature toughness matter more than the strength advantage, SMO 254’s single-phase austenitic structure is the more straightforward, lower-risk specification.
