Phosphor Bronze — The Cu-Sn-P Alloy and What Phosphorus Does

Why Phosphor Bronze — Tin Strengthens, Phosphorus Deoxidises and Springs

Phosphor bronze is a family of copper-tin alloys (Cu-Sn) with a small but critically important addition of phosphorus (0.01–0.35%). The tin addition (ranging from approximately 1.25% to 10%) progressively strengthens the copper matrix and dramatically improves wear resistance and spring-back characteristics compared with pure copper or brass. The phosphorus serves two functions: it acts as a deoxidiser during casting (removing dissolved oxygen that would form cuprous oxide inclusions weakening the alloy) and in higher concentrations it forms copper phosphide precipitates that further harden the alloy and dramatically improve its anti-galling and anti-seizing behaviour in sliding contact.

The defining functional property that makes phosphor bronze unique among copper alloys — and the primary reason it is specified for fasteners — is its outstanding anti-galling and anti-seizing behaviour. When phosphor bronze threads contact threads of the same or dissimilar metal under load, the alloy does not cold-weld (gall) the way austenitic stainless steels or certain aluminium alloys do. This makes phosphor bronze the fastener material of choice for: bearing sleeve bolts (the bolt threads in a bearing housing that may see vibration-induced fretting), electrical contact terminal screws (the Cu-Sn system maintains low contact resistance over many insertion/removal cycles without galling the female thread), and marine hardware connections that are periodically disassembled for maintenance.

Compared with free-cutting brass (C36000): phosphor bronze (C51000) has significantly higher tensile strength (≥520 MPa spring-temper vs brass ≥360 MPa), much better fatigue resistance and spring-back characteristics, and superior resistance to dezincification (phosphor bronze contains no zinc). For precision springs that also function as fasteners — electrical contact clips, spring-loaded fastening elements, and retention clips — phosphor bronze is the only copper-base alloy with the required combination of strength, conductivity, and spring characteristics.

Four Unique Engineering Properties of Phosphor Bronze Fasteners

Why Phosphor Bronze — Where No Other Copper Alloy Performs the Same

01

Anti-Galling & Anti-Seizing — the Defining Property

The single most important reason phosphor bronze is specified over brass or silicon bronze for many fastener applications. Austenitic stainless steels (304, 316L) are notorious for galling — thread surfaces cold-weld under load, shearing off and destroying both bolt and nut threads in a single tightening pass. Phosphor bronze does not cold-weld. The copper phosphide precipitates in the alloy matrix act as a self-lubricating layer that prevents micro-welding of thread surfaces even under high contact pressure. For valve stem packing gland nuts, bearing housing retention screws, marine deck fittings that are periodically disassembled, and all applications requiring trouble-free repeated disassembly, phosphor bronze is the copper-alloy specification.

02

Spring Characteristics — Elastic Deflection and Fatigue Resistance

Phosphor bronze has the best combination of spring elasticity and corrosion resistance of any copper-base alloy. In spring-hard or hard temper, C51000 achieves ≥520 MPa UTS with an elastic modulus (~110 GPa) that gives excellent spring-back — the ability to deflect under load and return to the original dimension repeatedly without permanent set. This makes phosphor bronze the standard material for spring washers, disc springs, lock washers under vibration, and all fastener retention systems where the spring element must also resist marine or atmospheric corrosion. Brass spring washers fatigue and lose spring force; phosphor bronze retains its spring force over many millions of load cycles.

03

Electrical Conductivity + Strength — Contact Screws and Terminal Hardware

Phosphor bronze C51000 has a conductivity of approximately 15% IACS — far lower than pure copper (101% IACS) but far higher than stainless steel (<2% IACS). For electrical contact terminal screws, bus bar clamp bolts, and electrical switchgear connection hardware, phosphor bronze provides a critical combination: enough conductivity to carry contact currents without excessive heating, enough strength to provide the required bolt preload for contact resistance minimisation, and anti-galling thread behaviour for repeated plug/unplug cycles without thread destruction. Pure copper is too soft; stainless steel has too low conductivity and galls; brass lacks the fatigue resistance for vibrating electrical connections. Phosphor bronze is the correct specification.

04

Marine Corrosion + No Dezincification Risk

Phosphor bronze contains no zinc — there is nothing to dezincify. This makes it superior to brass in any marine or wet service where dezincification is a risk (stagnant seawater, soft water). Combined with the inherent corrosion resistance of the Cu-Sn-P system against atmospheric and mild marine environments, phosphor bronze is the correct specification for marine deck fittings, porthole frame bolts, boat engine mounting hardware, and all marine above-waterline bolting where the combination of anti-galling (for removable connections) and no dezincification risk are both required. For below-waterline service requiring higher strength, specify aluminium bronze; for Cu-Ni piping systems, specify Cu-Ni 90/10.

Three Phosphor Bronze Grades — More Tin = More Strength

Grade Profiles — C51000 · C52100 · C54400

Three phosphor bronze grades available as fasteners. Each additional percent of tin raises strength and hardness — at the cost of reduced ductility and conductivity. C54400 adds lead for machinability without significantly changing corrosion or spring properties.

Washers & Spring Washers

Plain flat washers (DIN 125) and spring lock washers (DIN 127) in C51000 spring-temper phosphor bronze. M3–M24. The phosphor bronze spring washer is one of the most important product forms — in vibrating electrical panel connections and marine bolt assemblies, a phosphor bronze spring washer provides both the spring clamping force and the corrosion resistance in a single component, without the dezincification risk of brass spring washers.

DIN 912 / ISO 4762 · C51000

Socket Cap Screws

Hex socket cap screws in C51000. M3–M20. Electrical panel internal screws, marine instrument housing screws, bearing sleeve retention screws, PCB mounting screws in RF/microwave equipment requiring non-magnetic non-ferrous socket cap screw with better fatigue strength than brass, and all confined-access anti-galling applications where the phosphor bronze socket cap screw head form provides the cleanest engagement with the substrate material.

DIN 84 / ISO 1207 · C54400

Machine Screws

Slotted and Phillips machine screws in C54400 (free-machining, for tight tolerances) and C51000. M2–M10. Precision instrument panel screws, electrical connector retention screws, contact spring retention screws, bearing shield retention screws, and all small phosphor bronze machine screw applications where the anti-galling Cu-Sn-P alloy system provides superior repeated-insertion performance over brass machine screws in metal-tapped holes.

ASTM B139 · C51000 · Stud Bolts

Stud Bolts

Fully threaded stud bolts in C51000. M6–M36, lengths to 300mm. For valve body flanges where anti-galling stud engagement in the valve body thread is critical — stainless valve bodies with stainless stud bolts gall; phosphor bronze stud bolts in stainless valve body threads do not. For pump cover flanges, heat exchanger channel head connections, and marine compressor flanges where repeated maintenance disassembly requires reliable thread release.
